The Wind Shrine is your first real dungeon. It's short but teaches you the basics; you'll face your first boss here and unlock the job system that defines FF5.
Shrine Interior (1F-3F)
Dock your ship at the small pier and head inside. The shrine has four floors with a straightforward path. Enemies include Black Goblins, Moldwynds, and Mani Wizards. Nothing too threatening, but the Mani Wizards can cast Aero, so don't let your HP drop too low.
Each floor has a couple of chests off the main path. The Broadsword on 3F is a solid upgrade for Bartz or Faris if you haven't found better equipment yet. The Staff is useful once you unlock mage jobs.
King Tycoon's Chamber (4F)
At the top of the shrine, you'll find King Tycoon standing before the Wind Crystal. He's in some kind of trance. Before anyone can react, a monster attacks.
Pattern-based boss. Alternates between wings open (vulnerable) and wings closed (counterattacks).
Strategy
- Attack only when wings are spread open
- When wings close, defend or heal. Attacking triggers a powerful counter
- The pattern is predictable: 2-3 turns open, then closes briefly
- Don't bother with magic; physical attacks are more efficient here
Rewards: 300 EXP, 0 Gil
The Wind Crystal Shatters
After the fight, the Wind Crystal shatters despite your efforts. King Tycoon disappears. But the crystal's fragments grant you power - the job system unlocks.
Your First Jobs
The Wind Crystal grants six jobs:
- Knight - High defense, can Cover allies and use swords
- Monk - Strongest physical damage with bare fists, Counter ability
- Thief - High agility, Steal command, can see hidden passages
- Black Mage - Offensive magic: Fire, Blizzard, Thunder
- White Mage - Healing magic: Cure, Poisona, Protect
- Blue Mage - Learns enemy abilities when hit by them
Recommended Setup: For early game, try 2 Knights for durability, 1 White Mage for healing, and 1 Black Mage for elemental damage. Swap in Thief when you want to steal or find hidden paths. Blue Mage becomes powerful later once you learn more spells.
