Great Sea Trench

The Great Sea Trench lies deep beneath the ocean floor. You'll need the submarine to reach it. This dungeon features lava floors, underwater caves, and a triple boss encounter at the end. The fifth sealed weapon tablet awaits those who can survive.

Getting There

Board your submarine and dive. The entrance to the Great Sea Trench appears as a trench on the ocean floor in the southeastern region of the world map. Look for an obvious crack in the seabed. Submerge and enter.

Dungeon Overview

The Sea Trench spans six floors, mixing underwater and volcanic environments. Lava tiles deal damage when walked on, so equip Float or damage-reduction accessories. The dungeon also features one-way doors and warp points that can disorient you.

Enemy Notes

  • Unknown (Slime) - Splits when hit physically; use magic
  • Blob - Absorbs most elements; hit with non-elemental attacks
  • Vilia - Flying enemy; uses charm effects
  • Gel Fish - Water creature; weak to Lightning
  • Druid - Caster enemy; silence them quickly

Bring Float-capable characters or equip the Angel Ring. The lava sections hurt. A lot. Also, the Unknown enemies are annoying; one physical hit splits them into two more. Stick to magic or flee.

Floor-by-Floor Guide

B1 - B2: Entry Floors

The first floor is mostly straightforward. Grab the Dragon Fang near the entrance for crafting purposes. B2 has a hidden path along the eastern wall leading to the Kaiser Knuckles; press against suspicious walls.

B3: Lava Section

Floor 3 introduces lava tiles. Cast Float on your party or take constant damage. The Fire Ring here absorbs fire damage, which helps in later fights. Navigate carefully; some paths lead to dead ends.

B4: Dwarf Tunnels

Halfway through, you'll encounter dwarves who've been mining here. They offer healing and a save point. Take advantage of this. Stock up on items if you're running low. The Protect Ring in this area blocks instant death; equip it.

B5 - B6: Deep Trench

The final stretch gets maze-like. Watch for warp tiles that send you back to earlier floors. The Dark Matter on B5 is useful for Mix abilities. Push through to B6 for the boss encounter.

Boss: Triton, Nereid, and Phobos

Three bosses attack simultaneously at the bottom of the trench. They're manageable individually but dangerous together.

Triton, Nereid, Phobos
HP: ~13,333 each

Three sea demons representing different elements. Triton uses fire, Nereid uses ice, Phobos uses lightning.

Strategy

  • Focus down one enemy at a time; split damage means longer fight and more attacks against you
  • Triton is weak to Ice; Nereid is weak to Fire; Phobos is weak to Water
  • Or just use non-elemental attacks like Flare or Bahamut summon
  • They can inflict various status effects; Ribbons help
  • Keep Shell up to reduce magical damage
  • Kill Phobos first; his attacks hit hardest

Rewards: 8,000 EXP each (24,000 total), 0 Gil

After defeating all three, claim the Fifth Tablet from the pedestal behind them. A teleporter appears to take you back to the surface.
