Walse Tower

MISSABLE CONTENT WARNING

Walse Tower sinks after you defeat Garula and is gone forever until much later in the game. Five unique enemy types appear only here: Elf Toad, Ice Soldier, Ricard Mage, Wyvern, and Padfoot. If you want Blue Magic from these enemies or need to complete your bestiary, farm them now.

From Walse Castle, head east to the tower standing in the water. The King mentioned something was wrong with the crystal; you're about to find out what.

Tower Floors 1-5

The tower is straightforward. No puzzle-solving here; just climb and fight. Each floor has one or two treasure chests tucked away in corners, so hug the walls as you ascend.

Enemies hit harder than what you've faced before. Elf Toads can inflict Toad status, which cripples your party. Carry Maiden's Kisses or have Esuna ready. Ice Soldiers and Ricard Mages cast mid-level spells, so don't let fights drag on.

Wyverns are the main threat. They're fast and hit hard physically. If you've unlocked Blue Mage from the Wind Crystal, Wyverns can teach you Breath Wing by using it on your party. Have your Blue Mage defend at low HP to catch the ability.

Padfoot enemies are rare but worth fighting; they drop Hi-Potions and occasionally better gear.

Preparing for Garula

Before the boss room, heal up completely. Garula's a physical powerhouse with no elemental weakness to exploit. Stock up on Hi-Potions if you're running low. The fight's about endurance, not tricks.

If you have a Monk, they'll shine here. Counter combined with high HP makes them an excellent tank. Knights with Cover can protect squishier party members, too.

Garula
HP: 1200

A massive purple beast protecting the Water Crystal. Garula uses only physical attacks but hits devastatingly hard. At low HP, it enters a rage mode and attacks twice per turn.

Strategy

  • No elemental weakness; magic damage is still useful for consistency
  • Keep everyone above 100 HP; Garula deals 80-120 per hit
  • When Garula starts attacking twice, go all-out on offense
  • Monks with Counter can rack up free damage throughout
  • Knights should use Cover on your White Mage or casters

Rewards: 1900 EXP, 500 Gil

The Water Crystal Shatters

After defeating Garula, approach the crystal. A cutscene triggers; the crystal shatters despite your efforts. But from its shards, you gain access to five new jobs: Berserker, Time Mage, Summoner, Red Mage, and Mystic Knight.

Time Mage is particularly valuable. Haste doubles a character's speed, and Slow cripples bosses. Summoner gives you access to powerful magic once you acquire summons. Mystic Knight can enchant their blade with elements; this becomes crucial for exploiting weaknesses later.

The tower begins sinking. You've got time to leave normally, but don't dawdle. Head back down the stairs and exit before the water claims everything.

LAST CHANCE

Once you exit, the tower sinks. You can return much later in the game with a submarine, but for now, this is your only shot at the unique enemies and any chests you missed. Make sure you grabbed everything on your way up.

Treasure Chests

All chests are accessible during your first visit. Don't skip any; you won't get another chance for a long time.

Next Steps

With the tower underwater and new jobs in hand, return to Walse Castle to report to the King. Your next destination is Karnak, a town powered by the Fire Crystal. Head south from Walse and follow the coastline west until you reach the steamship waiting to ferry you across.
