Vikings' Cove

After escaping the Tozus Tunnel, you emerge on the other side of the continent with access to new areas. The Vikings' Cove lies ahead - a settlement of seafarers who can provide you with a ship. This chapter covers the cove itself, an important missable bestiary entry, and the Nepto Temple dungeon where you'll need the Mini spell.

Vikings' Cove

Head to Vikings' Cove on the eastern coast. The Vikings here are friendly enough - they've been dealing with a dragon problem that's been preventing them from sailing. Their leader offers you their ship, the Enterprise, if you can solve the Nepto Dragon situation.

Before leaving, explore the cove thoroughly for hidden treasures. There are multiple secret passages that contain valuable spells and Gil.

Hidden Paths

From the entrance, look for a hidden path to the right. Follow it to find a chest containing 300 Gil. On the second floor, there's another hidden path on the right side that leads to three chests containing the powerful -ara spells: Fira, Blizzara, and Thundara. These are significant upgrades to your magic arsenal.

The leftmost hidden path leads downward to two more chests, each with 300 Gil. Make sure you grab all the treasure before proceeding - there are 6 chests total in the cove itself.

The Enterprise

Speak to the Viking leader to receive the Enterprise. This ship allows you to sail the seas, opening up new areas to explore. However, the Nepto Dragon is causing problems - the Vikings can't fish or sail safely until it's dealt with.

MISSABLE BESTIARY ENTRY

Before heading to Nepto Temple, sail north in the Enterprise until you encounter the Nepto Dragon (Bestiary Entry 198). This is a scripted encounter that you cannot win - you must RUN AWAY immediately. Running from this battle is the only way to register the Nepto Dragon in your bestiary. If you defeat the Giant Rat in Nepto Temple first, this encounter becomes permanently unavailable.

After fleeing from the Nepto Dragon, you'll understand why the Vikings are having trouble. The dragon's rage stems from losing its eye - your job is to retrieve it from the thieves who stole it.

Nepto Temple

The Nepto Temple is located nearby. To enter the dungeon portion, you'll need to cast Mini on your entire party. Without Mini, you can only access the main chamber where the dragon statue sits. The actual dungeon entrance is a tiny hole that only miniaturized characters can fit through.

Cast Mini on your party before entering. Remember that being miniaturized severely reduces your physical attack and defense, so magic becomes your primary damage source in this dungeon.

Dungeon Enemies

Enemies in the Nepto Temple (all bestiary entries):

  • Petit (Entry 026) - Small enemies, weak to magic
  • Poison Bat (Entry 027) - Can inflict poison status
  • Lilliputian (Entry 028) - Small humanoids
  • Wererat (Entry 029) - Standard rodent enemies
  • Blood Worm (Entry 030) - Drain HP with attacks

The -ara spells you picked up from Vikings' Cove are extremely effective here since physical attacks are nearly useless while Mini is active. Blizzara, Fira, and Thundara should be your primary damage tools.

Temple Treasures

Navigate through the small dungeon to reach the inner chamber. Here you'll find three chests containing Shell Armor, Shell Helm, and the Serpent Sword. The Shell equipment provides solid defense, and the Serpent Sword is a useful weapon once you return to normal size.

Giant Rat Boss

At the end of the temple, you'll confront the Giant Rat - the creature that stole the Nepto Eye. Despite its name, this boss is appropriately sized for your miniaturized party.

Giant Rat
Bestiary Entry 199

The Giant Rat has no significant elemental weaknesses, but magic is your only real option while miniaturized. Physical attacks deal minimal damage due to the Mini status effect.

Strategy

  • Cast the -ara spells (Fira, Blizzara, Thundara) every turn
  • Keep your party healed - the rat hits hard
  • Physical attackers should use items or defend while mages deal damage
  • The battle goes quickly once you commit to an all-magic offense

After defeating the Giant Rat, you obtain the Nepto Eye. Exit the dungeon and remove the Mini status from your party. Return to the main chamber of the temple and insert the Nepto Eye into the dragon statue. This calms the Nepto Dragon and rewards you with the Fang of Water.

After Nepto Temple

With the Nepto Dragon pacified and the Fang of Water in hand, the seas are now safe to sail. The Vikings are grateful, and the Enterprise is fully yours to command. Your next destination is the Tower of Owen, but there's an important missable location to visit first.

Before leaving this area, make sure you have:

  • Fled from the Nepto Dragon encounter for the bestiary entry
  • Collected all 6 chests from Vikings' Cove
  • Collected all 3 chests from Nepto Temple
  • Obtained the Fang of Water from the dragon statue
