Castle Hein

MISSABLE DUNGEON WARNING

Castle Hein disappears permanently after completion. All 11 treasure chests, 5 bestiary entries (Pharaoh, Lemur, Lamia, Demon, Dullahan), and one hidden item are lost forever if not collected before defeating Hein. Take your time and clear everything before facing the boss.

After the events at Tokkul, the party wakes up imprisoned in Castle Hein. The Elder of the Living Woods has been corrupted by the dark sorcerer Hein, who uprooted the Elder Tree itself to create this floating fortress. Your mission is to escape, defeat Hein, and free the Elder.

Bestiary Entries

All five enemy types in Castle Hein are permanently missable. Make sure you encounter each one before defeating Hein:

  • Pharaoh (Entry 066) - Undead enemy, common throughout
  • Lemur (Entry 067) - Ghost-type enemy
  • Lamia (Entry 068) - Can inflict Confuse
  • Demon (Entry 069) - Standard demon enemy
  • Dullahan (Entry 070) - Armored undead, less common

Fight battles on every floor until you've encountered all five enemy types. Check your bestiary before proceeding to the boss to confirm you have entries 066-070.

Prison Escape

You start locked in a cell. Walk up to the guard and interact with him. He'll drop Mini (hidden item 21/61) - you need this spell to escape through the small passage. Cast Mini on your party to shrink down, then walk through the narrow gap in the cell bars.

Hidden Item: The Mini spell from the guard is a hidden item (21/61). Do not leave the cell without collecting it.

After escaping the cell, explore the prison area to find two treasure chests containing Holy Arrow and Phoenix Down. Return to normal size before proceeding.

Hallway Rooms

The main hallway has three doors leading to treasure rooms. Clear all of them:

Left Room

Contains 100 Gil and 30 Gil.

Middle Room

Contains 3000 Gil and 3300 Gil - the most valuable room.

Right Room

Contains Zeus's Wrath and Phoenix Down.

Lower Floors

B4

Follow the main path to find a chest containing the Royal Sword - a solid weapon upgrade. Continue fighting enemies to fill out your bestiary if needed.

B5

The final floor before Hein. Collect the Phoenix Down and Elixir from the two chests here. Make sure you have encountered all five enemy types before proceeding to the boss room.

Boss: Hein

Bestiary Entry 203

Weakness: Changes via Barrier Shift (Fire, Ice, or Lightning)

Hein's signature ability is Barrier Shift, which changes his elemental weakness between Fire, Ice, and Lightning. Attacking with the wrong element heals him. The key to this fight is the Scholar job.

Strategy: Have at least one Scholar in your party. Use the Scholar's Study ability to identify Hein's current weakness after each Barrier Shift. Then hit him with the corresponding element: Fire spells for Fire weakness, Blizzard for Ice weakness, Thunder for Lightning weakness. Your Black Mage or Red Mage should have all three elements ready.

Keep your party healed - Hein's magic attacks hit hard. Having a dedicated healer with Cura makes this fight much more manageable. Physical attacks work but are less effective than exploiting his weakness.

Upon defeating Hein, you receive the Fang of Wind, one of the four elemental fangs needed to restore the crystals. The Elder is freed and Castle Hein disappears, taking all uncollected treasures and unregistered bestiary entries with it.
