Crescent Lake & Mt. Gulg

With the Earth Crystal restored, sail southwest from Melmond past the Cavern of Earth peninsula. Continue west across the sea until you reach the eastern shore of the next continent. Dock at the port and walk southwest through the forest, around the crescent-shaped lake that gives the town its name.

Sailing southwest from Melmond to Crescent Lake

Crescent Lake

The town sits at the edge of a large forest. Cross the bridge in the northeast to find the Circle of Sages - twelve wise men who've been expecting you. Lukahn speaks of your destiny to defeat the Four Fiends. Talk to the sage to his right and he gives you the Canoe, which lets you travel on rivers.

The magic shops sell Level 6 spells for 13,000 Gil each. Thundaga is your Black Mage's priority. For White Magic, grab Protera and Invisira for boss fights, but leave one slot open for Exit after class change. Skip the Mythril gear - Mt. Gulg has better equipment in its chests.

River to Mt. Gulg

Use your new Canoe on the rivers west of Crescent Lake. At the second fork, head north. Ignore the first branch and continue north at the next split. The river enemies give good EXP if you want to grind - Crocodiles and Hydras are weak to Thunder, so Thundara and Thundaga make quick work of them.

At the final fork, head west. The volcano ahead is Mt. Gulg, home of the Fiend of Fire.

This dungeon has lava on many floors. Each step on lava deals 1 HP to your entire party, so plan your paths. Most enemies here are Fire-type and weak to Ice - Blizzara clears groups quickly. Check the bestiary for full enemy weaknesses.

Upper Floors

From the entrance, go west then north to find the stairs. B2 has the most treasure in the dungeon. Work through the rooms systematically - there's a Great Sword down a zigzag path, and the large southwest room has over a dozen chests with Mythril equipment, Gil, and consumables.

Lava Floors

B3 is flooded with lava. Walk south until the second pillar, then east past the right pillar to reach the stairs. B4 has more rooms with treasure. The important finds: Ice Brand (extra damage to fire enemies - equip this for the boss) and Flame Shield (fire resistance). A Lava Worm guards one of the rooms.

The Depths

The bottom floor has multiple paths. The northeast, east, southeast, and west paths each lead to a treasure room. The Flame Mail in the west room is guarded by a Red Dragon - worth fighting for the fire resistance. When you're ready, take the southwest path to find Marilith.

Defeat Marilith and the Fire Crystal is restored. Step into the portal to exit Mt. Gulg. Two Fiends down, two to go - head back to Crescent Lake and prepare for the Citadel of Trials and class change.

Treasure Chests

Mt. Gulg has the most treasure of any dungeon so far:

  • Mt. Gulg - 35+ chests including Ice Brand, Flame Shield, Flame Mail, and tons of Mythril gear
