The final dungeon. With all four crystals restored, you can travel back in time and break the cycle trapping the world. This is the longest, hardest stretch of the game - prepare thoroughly before entering.
Opening the Portal
Fly to the Chaos Shrine where your journey started. In the central chamber, a Black Crystal sits where you first fought Garland. Approach it with the Lute that Princess Sarah gave you. The power of the four restored crystals activates it, opening a time portal. Step through to travel 2000 years into the past.

The Final Dungeon
The Chaos Shrine of the past is a multi-level maze. The basement floors each end with a stronger version of the Fiend you already defeated. Important: If you defeat a Fiend and then Exit or Teleport out, they stay dead. You don't have to beat all four in one run. Check the bestiary for enemy weaknesses.
Tips for the Dungeon
- Save your stronger spells for the bosses, especially the later ones
- Use Potions and Hi-Potions to heal between fights - save MP for Fiends
- Equipment that casts spells (Giant's Gloves, Light Axes) saves resources
- Equip Ribbons on everyone who can wear them
Upper Floors
From the entrance, take the southeast stairs to the second floor. Walk east to the walled-in room and take the next set of stairs. On the third floor, a Death Eye blocks your path to a room with two chests (Dry Ether and Elixir). Kill it, loot the chests, then use the Lute on the stone tablet. Climb the ladder to the lower floor, go west then north to the northwest corner stairs, and head down to the basement.

B1 - Lich
Navigate through both large rectangular rooms to the southeast corner where the stairs wait. Lich guards the way down.

B2 - Marilith
A lava-themed floor. Navigate through the north doors, then east into the side rooms. The lower left room has a Protect Ring. A long hall south leads to a tiny room with Sasuke's Blade. The lower right room has a Protect Cloak. The far east room has an Elixir. After grabbing everything, find the red orb where Marilith waits.
B3 - Kraken
Enter the small room to your right and exit through the right doors. Travel south through C-shaped rooms and connecting halls until you reach an upside-down T-shaped room. Head east to find Kraken on the stairs.

B4 - Tiamat
Before fighting Tiamat, grab the treasure. Travel south to the second box-shaped hall, then east through a jagged hallway to a small room. The chest contains the Masamune - one of the best weapons in the game. Any class can wield it.

Give the Masamune to your Ninja, Master, or any character without Excalibur. Then return to the stairs and head east to find Tiamat.
Chaos
With all four Fiends defeated again, the way to the final floor opens. Use a Cottage to restore HP and MP. Check your equipment - Ribbons on as many characters as possible, Excalibur on your Knight, Masamune on your second-best attacker. Walk south through the lowest floor and enter the central room.
The figure waiting there is a familiar face: Garland, the knight you defeated at the Chaos Shrine at the start of your journey. The four Fiends sent him 2000 years into the past when he died. In the past, he gained their power and sent them forward in time. They died, sent him back, he empowered them, they sent him back - an endless loop of destruction. Garland has transformed into Chaos, and your job is to break the cycle permanently.

The Long Haul
This fight takes a while. 20,000 HP is a lot, and he'll use Curaja to heal himself. Don't panic when he does. Just keep attacking. Your buffed-up fighter with Excalibur or Masamune, hitting twice per round with Haste, stacked with Temper, will eventually overwhelm him.
Stay patient. Maintain your buffs. Keep healing. You'll win.
When Chaos falls, the time loop shatters. The paradox that trapped the world for 2000 years finally ends.

Watch the ending. Your Warriors of Light completed their destiny. The crystals are restored. Peace returns to the world. Congratulations - you've beaten Final Fantasy 1.
Treasure Chests
The past Chaos Shrine has 7 chests scattered across its floors. The Masamune is the ultimate prize.
