After escaping from the belly of Leviathan and reuniting with Ricard the Dragoon, you finally stand before the Mysidian Tower. This ancient structure holds the legendary Ultima Tome - the most powerful magic in existence. But reaching it will require defeating three elemental Gigas bosses, facing a powerful dragon, and witnessing a sacrifice that will change everything.
Mysidian Tower contains three Gigas bosses in sequence: Fire Gigas, Ice Gigas, and Thunder Gigas. Each has different elemental weaknesses and absorptions. You must defeat all three to reach the top. Prepare multiple elemental spells before entering - you'll need Blizzard, Fire, and either Scourge or poison-based attacks.
Mysidian Tower
The Mysidian Tower is a massive 10-floor dungeon with 24 treasure chests and 8 new enemy types. The tower is divided into three elemental sections - fire, ice, and thunder - each culminating in a Gigas boss fight. At the very top, Minwu awaits at the sealed door containing the Ultima Tome.
Notable enemy encounters:
- Basilisk - can inflict Petrify, have Gold Needles ready
- Devil's Bloom - status-inflicting pollen attacks
- Malboro Terra - devastating Bad Breath causes multiple status effects
- Vampire Girl - drains HP, weak to Fire and Cure
The three Gigas bosses and the White Dragon are covered in detail below.
Before entering Mysidian Tower, make sure you have:
- Blizzard at level 6+ for Fire Gigas
- Fire at level 6+ for Ice Gigas
- Scourge or Poison for Thunder Gigas (or physical attacks)
- Blink and Protect for all boss fights
- Flame gear (Flame Shield, Helm, Armor) for ice resistance
- Plenty of Hi-Potions, Ethers, Elixirs, and Phoenix Downs
- Gold Needles for Basilisk encounters
- Teleport spell for emergency escape
Floors 1-3: Fire Section
Use the Crystal Rod to open the tower entrance. On the first floor, explore both sides of the entrance hall to collect a Potion (left) and Ether (right). The stairs to 2F are in the center-north area.
The second floor begins the fire-themed section. Navigate the south passage for a Hi-Potion, then explore the west room for the Flame Shield - this absorbs fire damage and should be equipped immediately. On the third floor, collect the Flame Helm in the center area and Flame Armor in the east chamber. Equip the full Flame set on a front-line fighter for excellent ice resistance on later floors.
Equipment pickups in the fire section:
- Flame Shield (2F west room) - absorbs fire damage
- Flame Helm (3F center area)
- Flame Armor (3F east chamber)
Fire Gigas (4F)
Before the boss, grab an Elixir near the boss room. The Fire Gigas (HP: 1800) absorbs Fire and is weak to Ice. Cast high-level Blizzard while maintaining Blink and Protect on your party. The Flame gear reduces its Firaga damage significantly. With proper buffs and ice magic, this fight ends quickly.
The ice floors (5F-6F) feature damaging ice tiles that hurt your party as you walk across them. Equip the Flame gear (Flame Shield, Helm, Armor) to reduce this damage. Without ice resistance, the floor damage can drain your HP quickly.
Floors 5-6: Ice Section
On the fifth floor, the icy terrain deals damage with each step - your Flame equipment mitigates this. Navigate to the southwest for the Ice Brand and northwest for the Ice Shield. Ascending to 6F, collect the Ice Armor in the east passage and another Elixir before the boss.
Equipment pickups in the ice section:
- Ice Brand (5F southwest area) - ice-elemental sword
- Ice Shield (5F northwest room)
- Ice Armor (6F east passage)
Ice Gigas (6F)
With 2000 HP, the Ice Gigas is stronger than its fiery counterpart. It absorbs Ice and is weak to Fire. Blast it with high-level Fire magic while keeping Blink and Protect active. Blizzaga hits hard even with ice-resistant gear, so keep your healer ready.
Floors 7-8: Thunder Section
The seventh floor begins the thunder section. The south chamber holds a Thunder Spear, and a hidden alcove contains Sage's Wisdom (permanently increases Intelligence - use on Maria or your primary caster). On the eighth floor, collect Saint's Spirit (increases Spirit) on the west side and an Elixir before the final Gigas.
Equipment and stat items in the thunder section:
- Thunder Spear (7F south chamber) - lightning-elemental spear
- Sage's Wisdom (7F hidden alcove) - permanently increases Intelligence
- Saint's Spirit (8F west side) - permanently increases Spirit
Thunder Gigas (8F)
The hardest Gigas with 2500 HP and a devastating Thunderbolt that hits your entire party. It absorbs Lightning but is weak to Poison. Cast Scourge if you have it leveled, or rely on physical attacks. Blink is critical here - the physical attacks hit extremely hard. NulShock greatly reduces Thunderbolt damage if available. Consider using an Elixir mid-fight if MP runs low.
The Crystal Chamber
With all three Gigas defeated, the path to the summit is clear. On the ninth floor, collect valuable supplies: an Ether in the southeast corner, Phoenix Down in the north passage, and a Cottage near the stairs. Consider using the Cottage now to fully restore HP and MP before the final floor.
The tenth floor is the summit. Before reaching the crystal chamber, collect an Elixir and Hi-Potion in the pre-crystal area. One chest remains - but be warned, it contains a powerful monster.
White Dragon (Monster-in-a-Box) - Opening the final chest triggers a fight with the White Dragon (HP: 3500). This optional but rewarding battle pits you against a powerful dragon that resists most elements. Physical attacks are your most reliable damage source. Cast Berserk on your attackers, maintain Blink and Protect, and use Holy if leveled. Dragon breath attacks hit hard, so keep HP high. Defeat it for valuable experience and bestiary completion.
Minwu's Sacrifice
At the center of the crystal chamber, you finally find Minwu - your former party member who left to seek the Ultima Tome. He's been waiting at the sealed door, studying the magic that protects it. Minwu explains that the seal is incredibly powerful and cannot be opened by conventional means. The only way to break it is to sacrifice one's own life force.
Despite your protests, Minwu has made his decision. He channels all of his magical energy into breaking the seal. Light erupts from his body as the ancient barrier shatters. Minwu sacrifices himself to open the door to the Ultima Tome. The wise white mage who guided you at the beginning of your journey is gone. His sacrifice was not in vain - the path to the ultimate magic is now open.
Obtaining the Ultima Tome
With the seal broken, enter the inner chamber. You'll find five crystals - four silver and one gold. Each crystal bestows a permanent bonus when touched.
The golden crystal in the center (Ultima Tome) will teleport you out of the tower immediately after touching it. You MUST examine all four corner silver orbs FIRST or you will permanently miss the stat boosts! Touch the corners for your +10 stat bonuses, THEN touch the center for Ultima.
The four silver crystals in each corner grant permanent stat boosts to your entire party. Make sure to touch all four before approaching the center. These bonuses are extremely valuable and apply to your entire party.
Crystal stat boosts:
- Northwest Crystal - +10 Strength to all party members
- Northeast Crystal - +10 Agility to all party members
- Southwest Crystal - +10 Intelligence to all party members
- Southeast Crystal - +10 Spirit to all party members
The golden crystal in the center contains the ultimate prize - the Ultima Tome. Touch it to receive the legendary spell. Ultima is now in your inventory, but note that its power scales with the level of your other spells - to maximize Ultima's damage, you need many spells at high levels. It's a long-term investment that pays off in the final battles.
After obtaining the Ultima Tome, look for the purple floor pad in the crystal chamber. This teleportation pad instantly transports your party out of the Mysidian Tower, saving you the long trek back down.
Return to Castle Fynn
On the journey back to Castle Fynn, a new enemy called Mantis King appears in the overworld. This enemy is only available during this portion of the game. If you're aiming for 100% bestiary completion, make sure to encounter and defeat at least one Mantis King before progressing the story.
After teleporting out, make your way back to Castle Fynn to report your success. The overworld has changed since you entered the tower - new enemies roam the land, including the missable Mantis King. This large insect-type creature only appears in this brief window of the story and will no longer be available once you trigger the next major event.
Return to Castle Fynn and speak with Hilda. Report Minwu's fate and show her the Ultima Tome. The rebellion mourns Minwu's sacrifice but acknowledges that his death was not in vain. However, there's no time to grieve - news arrives of a new threat. The Emperor has summoned a massive Cyclone that threatens to destroy everything. This supernatural tornado must be stopped, or all is lost. Ricard's people once had wyverns that might be able to fly you into the storm...
Treasure Chests
Mysidian Tower contains 24 treasure chests across 10 floors. Three of the chests are boss encounters (Fire Gigas, Ice Gigas, Thunder Gigas) and one is a monster-in-a-box (White Dragon). None are permanently missable - you can return to the tower at any time.
