If you have not visited the Rebel Camp yet, do so NOW before entering Castle Fynn. The Rebel Camp is the ONLY permanently missable location in Final Fantasy 2. Once Castle Fynn is liberated, the camp disappears forever.
The time has come to reclaim Castle Fynn from the Empire. After rescuing Princess Hilda from the Coliseum and visiting the Rebel Camp, the Wild Rose rebellion is ready for their boldest assault yet. This is one of the largest dungeons in the game with 27 treasure chests, 22 enemy types (7 from monster-in-a-box encounters), and 4 new passwords to learn.
As you approach Castle Fynn, Leila intercepts you near the castle entrance. The pirate captain heard about the assault and couldn't resist joining the fight. She rejoins your party as the fourth member. Equip Leila with your best spare gear - she's a solid fighter with good agility, making her an excellent attacker. Consider giving her a strong knife or sword and decent armor for the battles ahead.
Castle Fynn Upper Floors
Enter Castle Fynn through the main gate. The rebels are fighting throughout the castle, creating chaos that gives you the opportunity to push deeper.
New enemies in Castle Fynn include:
- Black Knights - High defense and powerful physical attacks
- Sorcerers - Cast offensive magic (prioritize killing them)
- Stone Golems - Extremely high defense but weak to magic
- Magicians - Can buff enemy groups
- Coeurls - Dangerous Blaster ability
- Mines - Self-destruct for massive damage (kill first)
1F - Ground Floor
On the first floor, start by exploring the west wing. Enter the side room to find a Potion near the entrance and Eye Drops in the connected room. Cross to the east wing and collect an Antidote near the entrance and Gold Needle in the side room. Then find the stairs leading up to the second floor.
2F - Second Floor
On the second floor, a long corridor connects the west and east sides. Navigate carefully - enemy encounters are frequent here. Check the west corridor for a Hi-Potion and the east corridor for an Ether. Head to the north balcony area to find a Phoenix Down. There's also a hidden alcove on this floor containing a Cottage - walk through the seemingly solid wall on the east side to reach it.
Castle Fynn has multiple secret passages through walls. When a wall looks suspicious or a room seems to have hidden space, try walking into it. The Cottage on 2F is just the first of several hidden treasures.
3F - Third Floor
On the third floor, you'll find valuable Mythril equipment:
- Mythril Cuirass - West chamber
- Mythril Shield - East chamber
- Mythril Helm - Center room
- Knight's Armor - Path toward throne room
This equipment is excellent for your frontline fighters. Prepare your party before entering the throne room - a boss fight awaits.
Boss: Gottos
In the throne room, you'll face Gottos, the Imperial commander who has been occupying Castle Fynn. This is a dangerous fight that requires swift action.
Weakness: None | Resists: Status ailments
DANGER: Speed Buff + Attack Buff! Gottos uses his first two turns to cast Haste on himself and buff his Attack. After these buffs, his damage output becomes EXTREME - capable of killing party members in a single hit.
Critical Strategy: You must defeat Gottos QUICKLY before his buffs stack. Do NOT waste time with defensive buffs. Go all-out offensive from turn one.
- Berserk - Cast on your heavy hitters immediately for maximum damage
- Haste - Cast on Firion and Guy to get more attacks in
- All party members should attack - no defensive setup
- Use your strongest weapons and physical attacks
- If the fight drags on, Gottos will overwhelm you - restart and try again with better offense
Do NOT let this fight last more than 4-5 rounds. Once Gottos has both buffs active, he deals devastating damage that can quickly wipe your party. Speed is your only defense.
Castle Fynn Liberated
With Gottos defeated, Castle Fynn is reclaimed by the rebels! The Wild Rose rebellion finally has their home back. This is a major turning point in the war against the Empire. The castle becomes a safe haven where you can rest, speak with rebels, and learn new passwords from Hilda and Gordon.
Speak with Princess Hilda in the throne room to learn three crucial passwords for your next missions:
- Mysidia - A town of mages to the south where you can learn powerful magic
- Masks - Artifacts needed to unlock ancient secrets
- Ekmet Teloess - A secret phrase that opens hidden passages in the castle
The Ekmet Teloess password is particularly important - it reveals a secret door in the throne room leading to the castle's underground passages. Before using the password yourself, visit Paul's house in the southwest corner of Fynn town. Ask him about Ekmet Teloess and he'll tell you exactly where to use it: in the upper right corner of the throne room. Walk to the northeastern corner of the throne room, face east, and use the Ekmet Teloess password to reveal the secret passage.
Find Gordon elsewhere in the castle. He teaches you a fourth password: Ultima Tome - the legendary ultimate magic, hidden away by the ancients. This password will become crucial later in your journey when seeking the most powerful spell in existence.
Castle Fynn Underground
Return to the throne room and approach the wall behind the throne. Use the Ekmet Teloess password when prompted. A secret passage opens, revealing stairs leading down into the castle's underground.
Throne Room Treasures
Before descending, finish exploring the throne room:
- Acid Bottle - West side (Monster-in-a-box)
- Sleep Blade - East side (Monster-in-a-box)
- Golden Armor - Behind the throne
Castle Fynn has 7 treasure chests guarded by monsters. These trigger battles when opened. The enemies are tough but the rewards are worth it. Be prepared for a fight whenever you see a chest in a suspicious location.
Descend through the secret passage into the castle's underground. This multi-level dungeon contains the remaining treasures and leads to the White Mask. The underground has more dangerous enemies than the upper floors:
- Wraiths - Undead, weak to Fire and Cure magic
- Specters - High evasion, use magic instead of physical attacks
- Ghouls - Can paralyze, have Basuna ready
- Death Riders - Powerful undead knights
B1 - First Basement
On the first basement level, collect a Werebane in the first chamber. Navigate the west passage for a Mage's Staff (Monster-in-a-box) and the east passage has a Flame Bow (also a Monster-in-a-box). Continue to the corners of B1 to find Sage's Wisdom in the southeast and Saint's Spirit in the southwest - these stat-boosting items are valuable for your spellcasters.
B2 - Second Basement
Descend to the second basement level where the north chamber contains an Elixir. The center passage has a Giant's Helm (Monster-in-a-box). Check the alcoves on this floor: Thief's Gloves in the west alcove, and Spider's Silk in the east alcove (Monster-in-a-box). Find the stairs leading down to B3 in the southern portion of the floor.
B3 - The White Mask
The deepest level of the underground contains the prize: the White Mask. Navigate through the main chamber to find a Backstabber (Monster-in-a-box) and a Cross near the final room. In the deepest chamber, you'll find the White Mask. This key item is required for your journey to Mysidia.
With the White Mask in hand, cast Teleport to exit the underground. You've collected all 27 chests in Castle Fynn! Your next destination is Mysidia, the town of mages. The journey takes you south across the sea where you'll find the Holy spell, the Ice Shield, and where placing the White Mask on a sacred pedestal will unlock the path forward.
Treasure Chests
Castle Fynn contains 27 treasure chests - the largest collection in any dungeon so far. Seven of these are monster-in-a-box encounters. None are permanently missable after liberation, but some enemies only appear during the initial assault.
