The inside of Leviathan is a one-time location. Once you escape, you can never return. All 5 treasure chests inside are permanently missable. The Diamond equipment here is excellent and cannot be obtained anywhere else at this point in the game. Collect everything before escaping!
Your journey to the Mysidian Tower takes an unexpected turn. As your ship approaches the tower's island, the legendary sea serpent Leviathan erupts from the depths and swallows your ship whole! You awaken inside the creature's body, separated from your ship and trapped in the belly of the beast.
Inside Leviathan
The encounter with Leviathan is completely unavoidable. As you sail toward the Mysidian Tower with the Crystal Rod in hand, a cutscene triggers showing the massive sea serpent rising from the ocean. The creature's enormous jaws engulf your vessel, and everything goes dark. When you regain consciousness, you find yourself inside Leviathan's body. The organic walls pulse with life, and strange creatures inhabit these fleshy corridors.
In the chaos of being swallowed, Leila becomes separated from the party. She leaves to find her own way through the creature - you'll reunite with her later, but for now you continue with just your core party members.
Leila takes her equipment with her when she leaves. Make sure to unequip any valuable gear you've given her before approaching the Mysidian Tower. You won't have access to her inventory while inside Leviathan.
The inside of Leviathan is a small but dangerous dungeon. You'll encounter 5 new enemy types:
- Bolt Fish - electric fish weak to Earth
- Manta Ray - high evasion, difficult to hit
- Red Soul - dangerous spirit found in a chest
- Roundworm - the boss, but also appears in random encounters
- Sea Dragon - powerful water dragons with devastating physical attacks; use Blink and Protect immediately, and exploit their ice weakness
Parts of Leviathan's interior contain damaging floors representing the creature's digestive acids. Walking across these areas deals continuous damage to your entire party with every step. Minimize your time on these sections by moving quickly and directly. Cast Cure or use Hi-Potions after crossing damaging areas.
First Chamber
From where you awaken, head south through the first chamber. Explore the south passage to find the Diamond Armor - excellent heavy armor that should be equipped immediately on Firion or Guy.
Second Chamber
Continue through winding passages to the second chamber, where an east alcove contains the Diamond Helm. Watch for Sea Dragon encounters in the deeper sections.
Central Passage
Navigate the central passage carefully - parts cross damaging floor sections. Look for a hidden room along the passage to find the Diamond Gloves (the entrance may not be obvious, so check the walls for passages). With the full Diamond set equipped, your tank now has significantly improved defense. As you approach the deepest section, collect an Elixir in a side passage - save this for the upcoming boss fight.
Diamond equipment pickups:
- Diamond Armor (first chamber, south passage)
- Diamond Helm (second chamber, east alcove)
- Diamond Gloves (central passage, hidden room)
Meeting Ricard the Dragoon
In the deepest chamber of Leviathan, you find another survivor. Ricard, the last of the legendary Dragoons of Deist, has also been swallowed by the sea serpent. He's been surviving inside the creature, waiting for a way out.
Ricard recognizes the Crystal Rod in your possession. This sacred artifact proves you are allies of the cause. Show him the Crystal Rod, and he agrees to join your party. Ricard is a powerful ally - the last surviving Dragoon, an excellent physical attacker with high Strength who specializes in spear weapons.
With Ricard in your party, collect an Ether from his chamber. Ricard comes with his own equipment, so check his gear and adjust as needed.
Boss preparation checklist:
- Diamond armor pieces equipped on your frontline
- HP and MP fully restored
- Blink, Protect, and Berserk spells ready
- Hi-Potions and Ethers stocked
Make absolutely certain you have collected all 5 treasure chests before proceeding to the boss. After defeating the Roundworm and escaping, you can never return to Leviathan. This is your last chance!
Boss: Roundworm
The exit from Leviathan is blocked by a massive Roundworm. This parasitic creature has made the sea serpent its home and won't let you leave without a fight.
Weakness: None | Absorbs: None
The Roundworm has high HP and solid stats. With 120 Attack, its physical hits are devastating, and 100 Defense means your attacks will be partially mitigated. This is a war of attrition - survive long enough to whittle down its massive HP pool.
Recommended strategy:
- Blink - Critical! Cast on all party members to dodge physical attacks
- Protect - Reduces the damage from hits that get through
- Berserk - Cast on Firion, Guy, and Ricard to maximize damage output
- Have one character dedicated to healing - the Roundworm hits hard
- Use Ricard's Lance for strong physical damage
- Keep Blink images refreshed throughout the fight
The key to this fight is Blink. The Roundworm's 120 Attack stat means each hit deals massive damage, but Blink allows your party to dodge these attacks entirely. Keep Blink images up on everyone, especially your healer. Berserk is excellent for your physical attackers - Firion, Guy, and Ricard should all be Berserked to maximize damage output. With three strong attackers hitting the Roundworm, you'll chip away at its 2500 HP steadily.
Escape and Reunite
With the Roundworm defeated, proceed through the now-clear exit passage. You emerge from Leviathan's mouth onto the surface of the sea. Your ship, miraculously, is nearby - either having been regurgitated by the creature or having survived inside its stomach. Board your ship and sail away from the massive sea serpent.
Leila rejoins your party on the ship - she found her own way out during the chaos. Your party is now complete again, with the addition of Ricard. With Leviathan behind you, the path to the Mysidian Tower is finally clear. The Crystal Rod's power will grant you entrance to the tower's mysteries.
Before entering the Mysidian Tower, ensure you have completed the following. Once you enter the tower and progress through certain events, you may be locked out of previous content!
The following enemies become permanently missable after progressing past the Mysidian Tower. If you're aiming for 100% bestiary completion, ensure you have encountered all of them:
- Phorusracos - found in earlier dungeons
- Antlion - desert areas
- Killer Fish - ocean encounters
- Helldiver - coastal/ocean areas
- Buccaneer - sea encounters
- Sea Snake - ocean encounters
- Land Ray - coastal areas
There is at least 1 chest in Altair that becomes missable after certain story events. Return to Altair and open any chests you may have missed before entering the Mysidian Tower.
Before entering the Mysidian Tower, complete this checklist:
- Collected all 5 treasure chests from inside Leviathan
- Equipped the Diamond armor set on your frontline
- Verified all missable bestiary enemies have been encountered
- Opened all chests in Altair
- Created a separate save file
- Stocked up on Hi-Potions, Ethers, and Phoenix Downs
The tower marks a significant point of no return in the story.
Treasure Chests
The inside of Leviathan contains 5 treasure chests. All chests are permanently missable - you cannot return after escaping. The Diamond equipment here is excellent and should not be skipped.
