After the destruction of the Dreadnought, the rebellion needs new allies. The legendary Dragoons of Deist and their wyvern mounts could turn the tide against the Empire. Your journey now takes you to Deist Cavern - a dragon's lair hiding ancient secrets and a dying hope.
This chapter covers two visits to Deist Cavern: first to obtain the Pendant needed to communicate with the last wyvern, then a full exploration to place the Wyvern Egg in the Life Spring. Between visits, you'll return to Castle Deist and later uncover a shocking deception in Altair.
Part 1: The Pendant
Your first visit to Deist Cavern is brief. The goal is simple: obtain the Pendant that allows humans to communicate with wyverns. From Castle Deist, head south through the forest until you reach a cave entrance in the mountains. This is Deist Cavern.
Enter the cavern and head down to B1. The Pendant is located in a chest near the entrance - you don't need to explore deeply for your first visit.
New enemies in Deist Cavern are more dangerous than those in Castle Deist:
- Cockatrices - Can inflict Petrify (have Soft and Esuna ready)
- Ogre Mages - Cast offensive magic (kill quickly)
- Vampires - Drain HP (weak to Fire and Cure magic)
- Wyverns - High physical attack (the very creatures you're trying to save)
- Chimeras - Dangerous Blaze attacks (appear as a boss group)
With the Pendant in hand, cast Teleport to exit the dungeon. Return to Castle Deist immediately.
Return to Castle Deist
Head back to Castle Deist and make your way to the room with the last surviving wyvern. With the Pendant equipped, you can now understand its words.
The wyvern reveals a tragic truth: the Empire poisoned the wyverns' water source, killing nearly all of them. This wyvern is the last of its kind, and it's dying. But there's still hope - the wyvern gives you a Wyvern Egg.
The wyvern asks you to take the egg to the Life Spring deep within Deist Cavern. Only there can the egg hatch and the wyvern race survive. Shortly after entrusting you with this mission, the last wyvern dies.
This is your next objective: return to Deist Cavern, navigate its full depths, and place the Wyvern Egg in the Life Spring.
Part 2: Full Exploration
Return to Deist Cavern for a complete exploration. The dungeon has 5 floors with a challenging maze section and 12 additional chests beyond the Pendant you already obtained.
Deist Cavern is a long dungeon with a difficult boss fight. Make sure you have Protect and Blink leveled up, plenty of Hi-Potions, Ethers, and Phoenix Downs. The Chimera boss group uses powerful Blaze attacks that hit your entire party.
B1 - Entrance Level
You already grabbed the Pendant on B1 during your first visit, so head down to B2 via the stairs in the center of the floor.
B2 - Mythril Equipment
From the stairs, head left through the passage to find a Mythril Helm. Then go back and head to the right side of the floor for a Mythril Shield. Continue to the bottom of the floor and take the stairs down to B3.
B3 - Forked Paths
On B3, the floor splits into two paths. Take the left path first and navigate to the northeast area for Mythril Gloves. Then head to the southeast corner for Mythril Mail. The stairs to B4 are located in the center-south area of the floor.
B4 - Stat-Boosting Treasures
B4 contains valuable stat-boosting items:
- Saint's Spirit - Center passage (permanently increases Spirit)
- Sage's Wisdom - Side room (permanently increases Intelligence)
Use these items on Maria or your primary spellcaster. Find the stairs to B5 on the far side of the floor.
B5 - The Maze
The final floor is a confusing maze. Near the entrance, grab a Cottage - use it before the boss to restore HP/MP. Navigate the maze carefully. The passages twist and loop back on themselves. Keep heading generally downward and to the right. You'll find an Ether and an Elixir scattered through the maze. As you approach the end of the maze, grab the Phoenix Down before the boss encounter.
Boss: 4 Chimeras
At the end of the maze, you'll encounter a chest guarded by 4 Chimeras. This is a challenging boss fight.
Weakness: None | Resists: Physical attacks
DANGER: Blaze Attack! Chimeras use Blaze, a powerful fire attack that hits your entire party. With 4 Chimeras, you can take multiple Blaze attacks per round, quickly overwhelming your healing.
Cast Protect and Blink immediately. Protect reduces physical damage while Blink makes you harder to hit. Focus fire on one Chimera at a time to reduce incoming damage. Ice magic (Blizzard) works well. Have your healer ready with Cure at all times. Consider using the Cottage beforehand to enter the fight at full strength.
After defeating the Chimeras, open the chest to obtain the Wind Flute. This item will be important later in the story.
The Life Spring
Beyond the Chimera chamber is the Life Spring - a mystical pool where wyverns are born. Grab the Dragon Armor near the spring before placing the egg.
Approach the Life Spring and use the Wyvern Egg from your inventory. The egg sinks into the mystical waters. In time, a new wyvern will hatch - the last hope for the dragoon legacy.
With your mission complete, cast Teleport to exit the dungeon.
Altair: The Lamia Queen
Return to Altair to report your progress. When you arrive at the rebel hideout, Leila decides to leave your party. She's going back to her ship and her pirate crew.
Important: Make sure to unequip any valuable gear from Leila before she leaves, as she'll take her equipment with her.
The Impostor Revealed
Head upstairs to speak with Hilda. Something seems... different about her. When you speak with "Hilda" in the rebel hideout, she acts strangely. If you're playing as Firion, she'll invite you to her room for a private conversation.
This is a trap! The "Hilda" you rescued from the Dreadnought was actually the Lamia Queen in disguise. She reveals her true form and attacks!
Weakness: None | Resists: Status ailments
DANGER: Charm Attack! The Lamia Queen's most dangerous ability is Charm XVI, which inflicts Confusion on your party members. Confused allies will attack each other, potentially wiping your party.
You need Basuna at level 6 or higher to cure Confusion reliably. Have your healer focus on curing Confusion immediately when it lands. Physical attacks work well against her - have non-confused members attack while your healer manages status effects. If you don't have Basuna leveled, consider grinding it before this fight.
After defeating the Lamia Queen, Gordon arrives with the real Princess Hilda. The impostor has been exposed! Hilda thanks you for saving Altair from the monster's infiltration.
Speak with Hilda to learn about your next mission. The Empire has been holding gladiatorial games at the Coliseum, forcing captured rebels to fight for entertainment. Some of your allies may be trapped there. The Coliseum awaits - the Empire is using captured rebels as gladiators in bloody games. Your next mission: infiltrate the arena and rescue the prisoners.
