EXTREME DANGER: MALBORO ENCOUNTERS

The Cave of Mysidia introduces Malboros - one of the most infamous enemies in Final Fantasy history. Groups of Malboros can stunlock your entire party with Bad Breath, inflicting multiple status ailments simultaneously. If caught in a Malboro group, you may be completely helpless and forced to watch your party die without being able to act. Have Esuna at level 6+ and consider running from Malboro groups unless you're confident in your status resistance.

Journey to Cave of Mysidia

The Cave of Mysidia is located near the town of Mysidia. From Mysidia, head south to find the cave entrance in the mountains.

The journey itself presents dangers - you'll encounter new enemies on the path:

  • Cockatrices - Can inflict Petrify with their gaze attack (have Soft and Gold Needles ready)
  • Gigas - Powerful physical attackers, use Blink
  • Hellhounds - Fire-based attacks, weak to Ice magic
  • Ogre Chiefs - High HP, hits hard
  • Sorcerers - Cast offensive magic, prioritize killing them
!
MISSABLE BESTIARY ENEMIES

Two enemies on the path to Cave of Mysidia are only encountered during this portion of the game. If you're aiming for 100% bestiary completion, make sure to encounter these before proceeding too far:

  • Cockatrice - Journey to cave only
  • Stunner - Journey to cave only

Cave of Mysidia

The Cave of Mysidia is a large dungeon with 6 basement floors and 19 treasure chests. The cave is notable for its many hidden passages through walls - what looks like a dead end may actually lead to valuable treasure or the next floor. Be sure to check every wall!

New enemies inside the cave include:

  • Death Flowers - Use Pollen attacks that inflict status ailments
  • Malboros - Extremely dangerous, Bad Breath can wipe your party
  • Vampire Lords - Drain HP, weak to Fire and Cure
  • Ghasts - Undead with paralysis attacks
  • Black Knights - High defense, physical attacks
  • Dark Magicians - Cast Flare and other powerful spells
!
PREPARATION REQUIRED

Cave of Mysidia is a long and dangerous dungeon. Make sure you have:

  • Esuna at level 6+ for Malboro's Bad Breath
  • Basuna at level 6+ for status ailments
  • Plenty of Hi-Potions, Ethers, and Phoenix Downs
  • Gold Needles or Soft for Petrify
  • The Black Mask from earlier in the game
  • Teleport spell for emergency escape

B1 - First Basement

On the first basement floor, the layout branches in multiple directions from the entrance. Head east first through the winding passage to find an Ice Brand - this powerful ice-elemental sword is excellent for Firion or your primary physical attacker. Backtrack and take the west passage where you'll find a Flame Bow at the end - great for a ranged attacker like Maria. After grabbing both chests, find the stairs leading down to B2 in the center-south area of the floor.

B2 - Second Basement

On the second basement floor, proceed south from the stairs to reach a larger chamber where you'll find a Bell of Silence (casts Silence when used in battle). Navigate to the northwest corner of the floor where there's a hidden passage through the wall - walk directly into what looks like a solid wall to pass through and find a Mage's Staff, a powerful staff for spellcasters. The stairs to B3 are located in the eastern section of the floor.

B3 - Third Basement

On B3, the dungeon becomes more complex with multiple paths intersecting and hidden passages becoming more common. Near the entrance from B2, grab an Ether to help with MP recovery. In the center of the maze section, you'll find a Hi-Potion. More importantly, there's a hidden passage in the east wall that leads to an Elixir - don't miss this valuable item! If you hit what seems like a dead end, try walking directly into walls. The stairs to B4 are in the southeast corner, but you'll need to find the correct path through the maze to reach them.

B4 - Fourth Basement

B4 contains some of the best equipment in the dungeon. The floor layout is more open but watch out for tough enemy encounters, especially Malboros. In the south room, collect a Mythril Axe. Then find the hidden alcove by walking through the north wall to reach a Mythril Spear.

The real prizes on this floor are the robes:

  • White Robe - Hidden passage in west wall (excellent magic defense for your healer)
  • Black Robe - East chamber (perfect for your offensive spellcaster)

Equip both robes immediately - they provide significant magic stat boosts and defense. The stairs to B5 are in the northeast corner.

The Doppelganger Puzzle

B5 - Fifth Basement

On B5, before proceeding too far, collect the nearby treasures:

  • Cottage - Near the entrance (save for before the upcoming challenge)
  • Phoenix Down - Side passage
  • Saint's Spirit - West hidden room (permanently increases Spirit)
  • Sage's Wisdom - East hidden room (permanently increases Intelligence)

Firion's Doppelganger

As you approach a door on B5, you'll find it blocked by a mysterious figure - Firion's doppelganger! This shadowy copy of your party leader stands guard, preventing passage. You cannot defeat the doppelganger through normal means. Instead, you must use the Black Mask from your inventory. The Black Mask dispels the illusion, causing the doppelganger to vanish and allowing you to proceed.

Important: If you don't have the Black Mask, you cannot proceed! Make sure you obtained it earlier in the story. You may need to backtrack if you missed it.

B6 - Final Floor

With the doppelganger dispelled, proceed through the door and take the stairs down to B6 - the final floor of the cave. Enemy encounters here are at their most difficult. Navigate carefully and conserve resources for the journey ahead.

Collect the final treasures:

  • Spider's Silk - Near the final chamber
  • Acid Bottle - South corner
  • Hourglass - Hidden passage in the south wall
  • Crystal Rod - Deepest chamber (key item)

The Crystal Rod is required for entering the Mysidian Tower. With the Crystal Rod in hand, you can now challenge the tower and seek the ultimate magic within. Cast Teleport to escape the dungeon, or retrace your steps if you want to encounter more enemies for experience.

Journey to Mysidian Tower

With the Crystal Rod, return to Mysidia and prepare for the Mysidian Tower. The tower is located near the town and can only be accessed with the Crystal Rod in your possession.

!!
CRITICAL: SAVE BEFORE ENTERING THE TOWER

Keep a separate save file before entering Mysidian Tower! Once you enter the tower and progress through certain events, you cannot return to the world map for some time. Make sure you have:

  • Maximum supplies (Hi-Potions, Ethers, Phoenix Downs)
  • All spells you want leveled up
  • Collected all chests from Cave of Mysidia
  • A backup save you can return to if needed

Intercepted by Leviathan

Approach the Mysidian Tower and use the Crystal Rod to open the entrance. But your approach to the tower is suddenly interrupted! As your ship sails toward the tower's island, the sea begins to churn. The legendary sea serpent Leviathan rises from the depths!

Before you can react, Leviathan's massive jaws engulf your ship whole. Your party is swallowed by the great beast! Everything goes dark... You awaken inside Leviathan's body. The Mysidian Tower will have to wait - first, you must escape from the belly of the beast!

Trapped inside the legendary sea serpent, your party must navigate the creature's innards and find a way out. Other survivors from swallowed ships have made Leviathan their home. And somewhere in the depths, a familiar face awaits... The journey through Leviathan leads to an unexpected reunion and the recovery of a lost ally. Then, and only then, will you be ready to truly challenge the Mysidian Tower.
