Sealed Cave

Before tackling the Sealed Cave, you've got several optional areas worth exploring. The Underworld opens up at this point, and there's powerful equipment and summons to collect.

Optional: Underworld Exploration

Tomra

Southwest of the Dwarf Castle sits Tomra, a small town with useful gear and items. Check the northwestern warehouse for hidden items and stock up on supplies. The weapon and armor shops have decent upgrades.

Kokkol's Forge

Southeast of Dwarf Castle, you'll find Kokkol's Forge. The blacksmith here will be important later for crafting Excalibur. For now, search the area for 2 hidden items. You can't do anything else here yet.

Sylvan Cave

This cave is home to the Sylphs and contains valuable treasure, but the floors deal constant damage. Cast Float on your entire party before entering to avoid the floor traps entirely.

Navigate through the cave to find a cabin. Inside, you'll discover Yang unconscious alongside the Sylphs. Talk to Yang and the Sylphs - this sets up an important sidequest for later. You can't wake Yang yet, so continue exploring or leave after collecting the chests.

Cave of Summons and Land of Summons

The Cave of Summons leads to the Land of Summons where you can challenge two powerful bosses to earn new summons for Rydia.

Asura

The Queen of Summons fights by constantly healing herself with Curaga and Raise.

Strategy

  • Cast Reflect on Asura to bounce her healing spells back at your party
  • Use Wall or Reflect on her immediately, then go all-out with physical attacks
  • Without Reflect, she'll outheal your damage indefinitely

Reward: Asura summon for Rydia

Leviathan

The King of Summons hits hard with Tidal Wave, dealing massive water damage to your entire party.

Strategy

  • Equip any water-resistant gear you have
  • Keep Rosa on dedicated healing duty - Tidal Wave hits everyone
  • Lightning spells and Ramuh hit hard
  • Use Slow to reduce the frequency of Tidal Wave

Reward: Leviathan summon for Rydia

Three-Step Peninsula

Northwest of the Cave of Summons, there's a tiny 3-tile peninsula that spawns rare enemies you won't find elsewhere: Gorgon, Crawler, Gloomwing, Tarantula, and Green Dragon. If you're going for 100% bestiary completion, fight here until you've encountered all five.

Sealed Cave

When you're ready, head to the Sealed Cave southeast of the Dwarf Castle. Use Luca's Necklace (obtained from King Giott) to open the entrance. The cave spans six basement floors with 19 treasure chests scattered throughout.

Trap Doors

Trap Door Enemies (5,000 HP): Most doors in this dungeon are Trap Door enemies in disguise. When you open one, it transforms into a monster that targets a single party member. On its next turn, the Trap Door uses Ninth Dimension to instantly kill that character. You must defeat the Trap Door before it executes the attack.

How to Handle Trap Doors

  • Rydia's Bio spell deals heavy damage against Trap Doors
  • Cecil and Edge should attack with their strongest weapons
  • Have Phoenix Downs ready if someone gets caught
  • Save your game at the B4 save point before pushing deeper

Yellow Dragon (Rare Enemy)

For bestiary completionists: Yellow Dragon (5,500 HP) appears when you weaken certain Trap Doors without killing them. On B2, the door on the north wall or on B5, attack a Trap Door until it's low on HP without finishing it off. The Trap Door may summon a Yellow Dragon to assist. Kill the Yellow Dragon first for the bestiary entry, then finish the Trap Door.

B1 and B2

From the entrance, head through the first room and down the stairs. B1 has doors on both the west and east walls - each contains a chest but triggers a Trap Door fight. The Ether, Bestiary, and first Kotetsu are here.

B2 continues the pattern with more Trap Door encounters. Check the northwest corner for another Ether, the east wall for a Hi-Potion, and the north wall for a second Kotetsu. The northeast corner has another Bestiary entry.

B3 and B4

B3 opens into a larger area with more branching paths. The central door contains the Fuma Shuriken - give this to Edge for powerful Throw attacks against bosses. A Light Sword and Phoenix Down are also here.

On B4, you'll find a save room. Use it. The Demon Wall boss waits ahead, and you don't want to repeat the dungeon if you lose. B4 chests contain Hi-Potion, Light Curtain, Black Cowl, and Bell of Silence.

B5 - Crystal Chamber

The final floor has a few more chests before the boss room: Phoenix Down, Dry Ether, and X-Potion. Continue forward to reach the chamber containing the Dark Crystal. Approaching the crystal triggers the boss fight.

Boss: Demon Wall

Demon Wall
HP: 28,000

The Demon Wall slowly creeps toward your party from the moment the fight begins. If it reaches you, it crushes members one by one with instant death attacks. This fight is all about outputting damage before time runs out.

Strategy

  • Cast Haste on your entire party immediately to maximize damage output
  • Cast Berserk on Cecil - he will deal massive physical damage automatically
  • Edge should Throw Fuma Shurikens for heavy damage each turn
  • Rydia uses Bio or Blizzaga repeatedly
  • Rosa casts Haste first, then attacks or heals only if critical
  • Do not waste turns on buffs beyond Haste - every action needs to deal damage
  • The wall can inflict Gradual Petrification - have Esuna ready but prioritize offense

Note: Speed is everything. If you're underleveled (below 35-40), this fight becomes extremely difficult. Consider grinding or returning with better equipment.

After destroying the Demon Wall, collect the Elixir from the hidden room past where it stood. Proceed to the crystal chamber and claim the Dark Crystal.

Kain's Second Betrayal

With the Dark Crystal in hand, begin walking back toward the cave entrance. As your party approaches the bridge on the way out, a scene triggers. Golbez's voice echoes through the cavern, commanding Kain. Despite everything, Kain falls under Golbez's control once again.

Kain seizes the Dark Crystal from Cecil and leaves the party, taking the final crystal to Golbez. The party is left without Kain and without the crystal they fought so hard to obtain.

Return to Dwarf Castle

Exit the Sealed Cave and return to King Giott in the Dwarf Castle. Report what happened. Despite the loss, Giott provides the Drill attachment for the Falcon airship. The Drill allows the airship to tunnel back up to the surface world. You can now freely travel between the Underworld and the overworld.
