Return to Baron

Cecil returns to Baron as a Paladin, ready to confront the kingdom that turned him into a weapon. This chapter covers a lot of ground: a boss fight in town, a dungeon full of aquatic enemies, two back-to-back boss battles in the castle, and a story event that permanently changes your party. You get the Enterprise airship at the end, which opens up the world map.

Town of Baron

Party: Cecil, Palom, Porom, Tellah

The Devil's Road deposits you in Baron Town. The townspeople talk about Cid being arrested and thrown in the castle dungeon. Head to the pub in the northeast corner of town. Inside, you find Yang - but he's been brainwashed by Baron's forces. Two Baron Guards attack alongside him before Yang fights you directly.

Boss: Yang (Mind-Controlled)

Yang
HP: ~2,000

Yang fights like you'd expect - fast with martial arts. He deals solid damage but doesn't have much HP for a boss at this point in the game.

Strategy

  • This is a damage race. Hit him with everything you've got
  • Cecil should attack every turn
  • Palom and Tellah open with Fira, then switch to Firaga for more damage
  • Tellah can use Osmose if MP runs low
  • Porom handles healing - keep the party above half HP
  • Cecil's Cover ability can protect low-HP mages if needed

Rewards: Yang joins your party, Baron Key

After the fight, Yang snaps out of his brainwashing. He gives you the Baron Key and joins the party permanently. With five members, you've got solid coverage: Cecil tanks and deals physical damage, Yang provides martial arts and Kick for groups, Tellah brings black and white magic, and the twins handle offense (Palom) and healing (Porom).

Baron Town Cleanup

Party: Cecil, Palom, Porom, Tellah, Yang

The Baron Key unlocks several previously inaccessible doors; grab some free items before heading to the Old Waterway:

  • Weapon/Armor Shop - Now accessible. A hidden path leads around to the back of the store
  • Hidden Area Behind Shop - Contains 2000 Gil, Zeus's Wrath, and 1000 Gil
  • Old Waterway Entrance - Southwest corner of town, the door you couldn't open before

Upgrade Cecil's equipment if you have the gil - he benefits most from the shop offerings now that he's a Paladin. The Zeus's Wrath items are important. They cast Thunder when used in battle, which comes in handy for the upcoming dungeon and the Cagnazzo boss fight.

Old Waterway

Enter through the door in the southwest corner of Baron Town. This dungeon is straightforward with no maze elements - just follow the path down through four basement floors. The waterway connects directly to Baron Castle's basement.

Enemy Encounters

Every enemy in the Old Waterway is aquatic and weak to either Lightning or Ice. Yang's Kick ability shreds groups of weaker enemies. For tougher fights, have Tellah and Palom use Thunder spells.

EnemyHPWeaknessNotes
Vile Shell58LightningCommon. One spell takes them down.
Killer Fish65LightningAppears in groups. Target with Thunder.
Alligator175IceTougher. Use Blizzard or physical attacks.
Splasher180LightningOften with Killer Fish. Thunder clears groups.
Hydra257LightningMultiple heads. Thunder works well.
Baron Guard280NoneNear castle entrance. Physical attacks only.
Electrofish284ProjectileUse bows or thrown weapons.
Gigas Gator292IceStronger alligator. Blizzara recommended.
Death Shell380LightningHigh defense. Thundara breaks through.
Flood Worm638LightningHighest HP. Hit hard with Thundara.

Castle Baron

Exit the Old Waterway into Castle Baron's basement. If you need to heal, head up to Cecil's old room in the West Tower (top floor) and rest in the bed. Otherwise, explore the castle for treasure before confronting the king.

Castle Exploration

Right Side Secret Area: Find a switch that unlocks a hidden path. This area contains six chests: Ether x2, Unicorn Horn x2, and Phoenix Down x2. The Unicorn Horns cure petrification - keep a couple on hand.

East Tower: Multiple floors of treasure await. Work your way up and down:

  • 1F: Hermes Shoes x2, Bacchus's Cider x2 (reach the 4th chest via B1)
  • 2F: Hi-Potion x2
  • 3F: Tent x2, Ether (also search the pot for another Ether)
  • B1: Check the second pot from the left for an Elixir
  • B2: This floor contains the real King of Baron, imprisoned

When you're ready, head to the throne room. Enter through the bottom-right door (labeled A on the in-game map) and descend to 1F, then proceed to the throne.

Boss: Baigan

Before reaching the throne room, you encounter Baigan, captain of Baron's guards. He pretends to be on your side, offering to help confront the king. Palom senses his deception and calls him out - Baigan transforms into a three-part monster.

Baigan
Body: 4,444 HP | Arms: 444 HP each

Baigan splits into three targets: the main body and Left/Right Arms. Each part attacks separately. The arms regenerate if you destroy them while the body lives.

Strategy

  • Target the body - Cecil and Yang should focus all attacks on Baigan's main body
  • Yang uses Focus - Build up power, then unleash on the main body
  • Tellah opens with Firaga - Get heavy damage in before Baigan applies Reflect
  • Use Quake - Palom's Quake spell hits all three parts and ignores Reflect
  • Watch for Reflect - Baigan casts Reflect on himself early. After he does, Tellah should switch to healing
  • Left Arm paralyzes - The left arm can paralyze party members
  • Right Arm drains HP - The right arm steals health
  • Don't bother killing arms - They regenerate. Focus fire on the body
  • Porom heals - Keep the party healthy. This fight can drag on

Warning: When Baigan dies, he self-destructs for around 500 damage to the whole party. Make sure everyone has HP to survive.

Boss: Cagnazzo

Immediately after defeating Baigan, you enter the throne room and discover the truth: the King of Baron is actually Cagnazzo, the Archfiend of Water. He's one of Golbez's four elemental fiends, and he's been impersonating the king to control Baron's military. There's no chance to save or heal between fights.

Cagnazzo
HP: 5,312 | Archfiend of Water

Cagnazzo alternates between offensive and defensive phases. His most dangerous attack is Tsunami, a party-wide water spell that hits for heavy damage. He telegraphs it by surrounding himself with a water barrier.

Strategy

  • Use Ice when vulnerable - Palom and Tellah open with Blizzara/Blizzaga for heavy damage
  • Cecil attacks continuously - Physical damage works in any phase
  • Yang uses Focus - Build up power for bigger hits
  • Porom handles healing - Keep the party healthy throughout
  • Watch for the water message - When you see that water is gathering around Cagnazzo, Tsunami is coming
  • Break the barrier with Lightning - Hit him with Thunder/Thundara/Thundaga to cancel the water barrier and prevent Tsunami
  • Zeus's Wrath works - The items from the Waterway cast Thunder. Use them if your mages are low on MP
  • Shell phase = recovery time - When Cagnazzo retreats into his shell at low HP, he takes reduced damage. Use this time to heal and restore MP
  • Tellah handles Thunder duty - Have him ready to cast Thundara whenever the water barrier appears
  • Switch to Ice between barriers - Blizzara/Blizzaga deal the most damage when his barrier is down

Rewards: Victory over the Archfiend, access to the Enterprise

The Twins' Sacrifice

With Cagnazzo defeated, the throne room begins to collapse. The walls start closing in, threatening to crush the party. There's no escape - the exits are sealed.

Palom and Porom make a choice. The twins cast Break on themselves, turning to stone to hold the walls apart. The party tries to reverse the petrification with Esuna and soft items, but nothing works. Tellah confirms that the spell was cast willingly - only the caster can undo self-inflicted petrification.

Permanent Party Change: Palom and Porom are gone for the rest of the game. There is no way to prevent this or reverse it. The twins sacrifice themselves to save Cecil and the others. Their stone forms remain in the throne room as a memorial.

Cid and the Enterprise

Party: Cecil, Tellah, Yang, Cid

After the twins' sacrifice, explore the castle to find Cid in the basement where the real king was imprisoned. Cid has been held captive since refusing to help Baron's military operations. He joins the party and leads you to the Enterprise, Baron's airship, docked outside the castle.

As you board the Enterprise, Kain appears. He demands the Crystal of Earth in exchange for Rosa's life. She's being held in the Tower of Zot, a floating fortress. Kain leaves to report to Golbez while the party decides their next move.

New Party Member: Cid is an engineer, not a fighter. He can equip hammers and uses the Analyze ability to reveal enemy stats. His physical damage is low compared to Cecil and Yang, but Analyze helps against bosses with unknown patterns.

What's Next

The Enterprise gives you access to the entire world map. Your story destination is Troia, the kingdom to the northwest that holds the Crystal of Earth. However, several optional locations are now accessible:

  • Mist Village - Return to grab items you couldn't reach earlier
  • Agart - A small island town south of Baron (important later)
  • Mythril Town - Eastern continent, has rare equipment including Mythril gear
  • Eblan Castle - Southwest island, a mini-dungeon with tough enemies. Save this for later if your party is struggling

Fly northwest to Troia when you're ready to continue the main story. The kingdom needs your help, and Rosa needs you to bring that crystal.
