Dwarven Castle


After obtaining the Magma Stone from the Tower of Zot, your next destination is the village of Agart. This small island town holds the key to reaching the Underworld.

Agart Village

Agart sits on a small island south of Baron. Land the Enterprise nearby and enter the village. The dwarves here are friendly but offer little beyond basic supplies.

Your party at this point includes Cecil, Rosa, Kain, Yang, and Cid. Stock up if needed - the Inn costs 50 Gil per night, and the shops carry standard equipment and healing items.

HIDDEN ITEM

Search the grassy area north of the Observatory to find a hidden Antarctic Wind.

Head to the well in the center of town. Interact with it and select the Magma Stone from your inventory. The stone triggers a volcanic eruption that tears open a massive hole in the ocean floor. This eruption somehow leaves the village unharmed but reveals the entrance to the Underworld.

Return to the Enterprise and fly directly into the newly formed crater. Your airship plunges into the depths below.

Entering the Underworld

The descent into the Underworld triggers an ambush. The Red Wings and Dwarven Tanks engage in aerial combat, and the Enterprise gets caught in the crossfire. Your airship takes heavy damage and crash-lands outside the Dwarven Castle.

Cid stays behind to repair the Enterprise while your party enters the castle. The Underworld is a vast cavern system lit by rivers of molten lava. The Enterprise cannot fly over lava even after repairs, so your movement will be restricted to cooler terrain.

Dwarven Castle

Enter the castle and speak with the dwarves. They greet everyone with their traditional "Lali-ho!" Make your way to the throne room to meet King Giott.

Story: King Giott explains the situation in the Underworld. Golbez has already seized two of the four Dark Crystals. The dwarves have been fighting to protect the remaining crystals, but the Red Wings have been relentless. The castle's crystal room holds the last crystal under Giott's protection.

During the conversation, Yang senses something wrong. He detects someone eavesdropping from behind the throne. A figure leaps out and escapes into the crystal room. Follow King Giott through the back passage to confront the intruder.

The Crystal Room Battle

Inside the crystal room, you find a group of dolls - three Calcos and three Brinas. These possessed toys were sent by Golbez to steal the Dark Crystal.

MISSABLE BESTIARY WARNING

The Calcabrina bestiary entry is permanently missable. You must allow the dolls to fuse into Calcabrina to register this entry. Kill one Calco and one Brina to register those entries, then stop attacking and defend. The surviving dolls will merge into Calcabrina after several turns. If you kill all six dolls before the fusion occurs, you lose the Calcabrina entry forever.

Possessed dolls that can merge into a larger, more dangerous form. The individual dolls can inflict Confuse on party members. Calcabrina hits harder but is still manageable.

Strategy for 100% Bestiary

  • Step 1: Kill exactly one Calco (male dolls, 1,369 HP each)
  • Step 2: Kill exactly one Brina (female dolls, 369 HP each)
  • Step 3: Have everyone Defend and wait for fusion
  • Step 4: Once Calcabrina forms, attack with everything

Combat Tips

  • Cecil and Yang attack consistently with physical strikes
  • Kain uses Jump attacks throughout the fight
  • Rosa heals and uses Esuna if anyone gets Confused
  • Confusion can cause party members to attack allies - cure it immediately

Boss: Golbez

Immediately after defeating the dolls, Golbez himself appears. This battle is partially scripted, but the outcome depends on your actions.

The mastermind behind the crystal thefts confronts you directly. He summons a Shadow Dragon to deal with your party.

Battle Flow

  • Opening: Golbez summons a Shadow Dragon
  • Scripted Event: The Shadow Dragon casts a lethal spell that incapacitates most of your party. This is unavoidable.
  • Rydia Returns: A Mist Dragon intervenes and destroys the Shadow Dragon. Adult Rydia emerges and rejoins your party.
  • Final Phase: Fight Golbez with your restored party

Combat Tips

  • Rosa focuses on keeping the party healed
  • Cecil and Yang attack with physical strikes
  • Kain continues using Jump
  • Rydia uses her Titan summon - it deals heavy damage

Party Change - Rydia Returns: The Rydia who rejoins is now an adult. She spent years in the Feymarch (Land of Summons), where time flows differently. She has lost her White Magic but gained access to powerful summons including Titan, Shiva, and Ramuh. She's now a dedicated Summoner and Black Mage.

The Dark Crystal Theft

Despite your victory, the battle isn't truly won. Golbez survives your assault. In a dramatic moment, his disembodied hand reaches out and seizes the Dark Crystal before he vanishes. The crystal room now stands empty - all of King Giott's efforts to protect it have failed.

Speak with King Giott after the battle. He directs you toward the Tower of Babil, where Golbez has taken the stolen crystals. The tower is accessible through the cave system north of the castle.

Exploring the Castle

Before pursuing Golbez, take time to explore the Dwarven Castle. The castle has two main towers (East and West), a basement level, and various shops scattered throughout.

Shops

The weapon and armor shops are located on 1F East. The Inn and item shop are on 1F West.

  • Weapon Shop: Dwarven Axe, Ogrekiller, Flame Claws, Ice Claws, Lightning Claws
  • Armor Shop: Dwarven Armor, Black Belt Gi, various helmets and shields

The elemental claws deserve special attention. Yang can equip any of them, and switching between Flame, Ice, and Lightning Claws lets him exploit enemy weaknesses throughout the Underworld. Purchase all three if you have the funds.

Secret Area: The Lali-Ho Pub sits between the weapon and armor shops. Inside you can find entertainment and speak with dwarven patrons. The castle also contains the famous Development Room - a hidden area where you can meet the game's creators as in-game characters.

Preparation for Tower of Babil

Before leaving the Dwarven Castle:

  • Buy all three elemental claws for Yang
  • Stock up on Hi-Potions, Echo Herbs, and Eye Drops
  • Purchase Tents or Cottages for the journey ahead
  • Equip Rydia with any available rods or robes
  • Rest at the Inn to fully restore your party

Cid remains at the castle to continue repairing the Enterprise. Your next destination is the Tower of Babil, accessible through the caves to the north.
