Mt. Hobs

Mt. Hobs is a mountain pass connecting the Damcyan region to Fabul. After curing Rosa's Desert Fever with the Sand Ruby, your party sets out to warn Fabul about Baron's aggression. The mountain stands in your way, but you'll gain a powerful ally on the other side - and Rosa will finally join the fight.

Getting to Mt. Hobs

From Kaipo, head west and board your hovercraft near Damcyan. Pilot the hovercraft northeast across the shallows until you reach the eastern shore. Disembark and walk toward the mountain cave entrance. You'll see a massive wall of ice blocking the path inside.

Rydia Learns Fire

Approach the ice barrier and the party will discuss how to proceed. Rydia hesitates - she's terrified of fire magic after witnessing her village burn. The girl who lost everything to flames must now face her trauma directly.

With encouragement from Cecil and the others, Rydia steels herself and casts Fire to melt the ice. She permanently learns the Fire spell during this scene. The barrier shatters, and the path into the mountain opens.

Character Development: This scene shows Rydia's growth. She overcomes her fear because she trusts Cecil and understands the mission matters more than her personal pain. Remember - Cecil destroyed her village. Her willingness to move forward with him shows real maturity.

Enemy Encounters

Mt. Hobs has a variety of enemies, including undead creatures weak to Fire and Holy magic. Rydia's newly learned Fire spell works well against Skeletons and Bloodbones. Watch out for Cockatrices - they can petrify party members.

Petrification Warning

Cockatrices can petrify your party members. Bring Gold Needles from Kaipo if you want to play it safe. You'll find one in the dungeon, but that might not be enough for multiple encounters.

Trail Area - First Half

After melting the ice, proceed west into the mountain. The dungeon is short but splits into two distinct areas. Early on, you'll reach a fork in the path.

Head toward the save point area first. This section has reduced random encounters - perfect for safely collecting treasure. You'll find four chests here: a Tent, a Potion, a Gold Needle, and 960 Gil. Grab all of them before proceeding.

Use the save point here. The boss fight is coming up soon, and you'll want a restore point in case things go wrong.

Summit - Meeting Yang

Take the path leading to the summit. As you climb higher, you'll encounter a dramatic scene. A lone Monk named Yang is surrounded by monsters called Domovoi. He's fighting them off single-handedly with his bare fists.

Your party rushes in to help. After defeating the Domovoi together, Yang introduces himself. He's a Monk from Fabul, tasked with defending the mountain pass. He realizes you're also heading to Fabul and agrees to join forces.

Yang Joins the Party

Yang is a Monk - he fights with claws and his bare hands. His stats favor physical damage and HP. His Kick ability hits all enemies at once, making him excellent for clearing groups. His Focus charges up for a powerful single-target strike. Put him in the front row and let him deal damage.

Rosa Unlocks Cure

Shortly after Yang joins, another scene plays. Rosa's healing magic awakens fully, and she gains access to her Cure spell. From here on, Rosa's your main healer. She'll keep the party alive through the fights ahead.

Before moving on, grab the Holy Arrows from the chest in this area. These are useful ammunition for Rosa's bow - she can deal decent damage from the back row while conserving MP.

Boss: Mom Bomb

With Yang and Rosa now in the party, proceed toward the eastern exit. A giant bomb creature blocks your path - the Mom Bomb. This boss has a specific gimmick that punishes careless players.

Mom Bomb
HP: 11,000

A massive bomb that grows larger as you damage it. At low HP, it explodes and splits into six smaller bombs. The explosion deals heavy damage to your entire party.

Phase 1: Mom Bomb

  • Cecil: Attack every turn. His damage is consistent and reliable.
  • Rydia: Use Chocobo summon if available. Otherwise, cast Fire or heal with items.
  • Yang: Standard attacks. Save Kick for after the split.
  • Rosa: Cast Slow on Mom Bomb first turn. Then alternate between Aim and healing as needed.
  • Edward: His damage is pitiful. Have him use Potions on wounded party members or play Sing to buff the party.

The Explosion

  • When Mom Bomb displays a warning message about exploding, have everyone Defend.
  • Press left on the D-pad to access the Defend command.
  • Defending cuts the explosion damage in half - this can save your party from a wipe.
  • The explosion deals 200+ damage to everyone if you don't defend.

Phase 2: Six Bombs

  • Mom Bomb splits into 3 Bombs and 3 Gray Bombs (6 enemies total).
  • Yang: Use Kick every turn to hit all six bombs at once.
  • Cecil: Use Darkness to hit all enemies. The HP cost is worth the damage.
  • Rydia: Use Chocobo or cast Fire on groups.
  • Rosa: Heal anyone who took heavy damage from the explosion.
  • The small bombs can also explode individually, so kill them fast.

Rewards: 1,200 Gil, 1,600 EXP

Recovery Tip: If your party is low on HP after the explosion, don't panic. Rosa's Cure spell and Potions from Edward should stabilize things quickly. The small bombs have low HP - Yang's Kick and Cecil's Darkness will clear them in 2-3 turns.

Exiting the Mountain

After defeating Mom Bomb, continue east across a stone bridge. You'll exit the mountain on the eastern side of the world map. The path to Fabul Castle is clear from here - no more random encounters between the exit and the castle gates.

Rest up and restock if needed. Fabul has an inn, shops, and a story battle sequence coming up. Make sure everyone is healed and Yang has his best claws equipped before entering the castle.
