Lunar Subterrane

The Lunar Subterrane is the final dungeon of FF4, a massive 12-floor underground complex beneath the Crystal Palace. This is where you find the best equipment in the game, face powerful optional bosses, and confront the final villain. Your party consists of Cecil, Rosa, Rydia, Edge, and Kain.

Teleport Warning: Cecil's Teleport spell stops working after B8F. Below that point, you can't escape. Plan accordingly and bring plenty of supplies. You can return to the Crystal Palace to rest and save between boss fights.

B1F - Entrance

Enter the Lunar Subterrane from the Crystal Palace. The first floor has hidden paths on both the left and right sides that lead to teleporters. Check the hidden wall for a Black Garb chest, but opening it triggers a fight with 2 Giant Warriors.

Black Garb
B1F, Monster-in-a-Box (2 Giant Warriors)

B2F - Sage's Staff

The teleporter brings you to B2F. There's a Sage's Staff chest here, but it's a Monster-in-a-Box containing 2 Dark Sages and 2 Selene Guardians. Take the teleporter to reach the stairs leading down.

B2F, Monster-in-a-Box (2 Dark Sages, 2 Selene Guardians)

B3F - White Dragon

Critical: Cast Float on your entire party before proceeding. The White Dragon uses Earthquake, and Float negates all damage from it.

The Murasame is guarded by the White Dragon. After defeating it, return to the Crystal Palace to rest and heal before continuing.

White Dragon
HP: 32,700

This dragon uses Earthquake for massive damage to grounded targets.

Strategy

  • Cast Float before the fight - negates Earthquake damage completely
  • Use Bahamut for consistent high damage
  • Physical attacks from Cecil, Kain, and Edge work well
  • Bio and Holy are effective magic options

Reward: Murasame (excellent katana for Edge)

B2F - Dragon Equipment (Second Visit)

After defeating the White Dragon, take a different path on B2F to find two chests containing the Flame Whip and Dragon Shield.

B3F - More Dragon Equipment (Second Visit)

Continue through B3F to collect the rest of the Dragon equipment set. Check the indent in the south wall for the Dragon Helm. On the east side, a hidden wall leads to the Dragon Mail and Dragon Gloves.

B4F - Behemoth and Consumables

This floor has multiple branching doors. The Stardust Rod chest is a Monster-in-a-Box containing a Behemoth (23,000 HP). The other items are unguarded.

B5F - Crystal Equipment and Pink Tail Farming

B5F is huge and contains the Crystal equipment set, the best armor in the game for most characters. Many chests are Monster-in-a-Boxes, so expect fights.

Red Fang
B5F, Flan Princess room (Pink Tail farming spot)

Pink Tail Farming

Adamant Armor: The small room containing the Red Fang chest is the Pink Tail farming spot.

  • Use a Siren in this room to force an encounter with 5 Flan Princesses (20,000 HP each)
  • Flan Princesses have an extremely rare chance to drop the Pink Tail
  • Check your Key Items tab to see if you have obtained it
  • Take the Pink Tail to the Adamant Grotto (near Mythril) to trade for Adamant Armor
  • The drop rate is approximately 1/64 per enemy

Important: Get the 2 Ribbons on B7F before farming Pink Tails. Flan Princesses can inflict nasty status effects, and Ribbons provide immunity.

Dark Bahamut and Ragnarok

A teleporter on B5F leads to a save point and Dark Bahamut, who guards Cecil's ultimate weapon. This is one of the toughest optional fights in the game.

Dark Bahamut
HP: 60,000

A powerful version of Bahamut that casts Reflect on himself and uses MegaFlare.

Strategy

  • Cast Reflect on your entire party - MegaFlare will bounce back to Dark Bahamut
  • The reflected MegaFlare hurts him badly
  • Physical attacks and summons (your Bahamut) work well
  • Don't cast offensive magic directly at him due to his Reflect
  • He counts down before MegaFlare, giving you time to prepare

Reward: Ragnarok (Cecil's best sword)

There is also a second Protect Ring chest nearby guarded by a Behemoth.

B6F - Invisible Bridge

B6F has a hidden feature worth knowing: an invisible bridge accessible by walking left from a narrow ledge. This leads to additional chests. The Minerva Bustier is a Monster-in-a-Box with a Dark Sage and 3 Selene Guardians.

B7F - Save Point, Ribbons, and Holy Lance

This floor has a save point in the first door, along with 2 Fuma Shurikens. The other doors contain bosses guarding powerful equipment.

First Door - Save Point

Save your game here. Grab the 2 Fuma Shuriken chests.

Middle Door - Plague

Plague
HP: 33,333 | Weakness: Projectile

Guards Kain's ultimate weapon. Uses Doom to put a death timer on party members.

Strategy

  • Plague casts Doom, which kills a character after a countdown
  • Option 1: Kill one party member before the fight so Doom targets a dead character
  • Option 2: Overpower quickly if your party is high level
  • Weak to Projectile attacks - Edge's Throw is effective
  • Bahamut and strong physical attacks deal good damage

Reward: Holy Lance (Kain's best weapon)

Right Door - Lunasaurs

Lunasaur x2
HP: 23,000 each | Weakness: Fire

A pair of dinosaurs guarding two Ribbons.

Strategy

  • Weak to Fire - use Firaga and Ifrit
  • Ragnarok deals 9,999 damage per hit from Cecil
  • Bahamut handles both at once
  • Focus on one at a time to reduce incoming damage

Reward: 2 Ribbons (immunity to most status effects)

B8F - Ogopogo and Masamune

The last floor where Teleport still works. There is a Fuma Shuriken on the side path. The Masamune is on a pedestal, and examining it triggers the fight with Ogopogo.

Ogopogo
HP: 50,000

A sea serpent guarding Edge's best weapon.

Strategy

  • Uses Tidal Wave for heavy water damage to the entire party
  • Bahamut is the most effective summon
  • Keep Rosa on constant healing duty
  • Cast Shell to reduce Tidal Wave damage
  • Physical attacks from Cecil, Kain, and Edge deal consistent damage

Reward: Masamune (Edge's best weapon)

Point of No Return: After B8F, you can't use Teleport to escape. Make sure you've collected everything you want and are fully stocked with healing items before proceeding.

B9F - Gysahl Whistle

This floor has an Elixir and the Gysahl Whistle, which lets you summon chocobos on the world map. Take the teleporter to continue.

B10F - Final Supplies

Two more Fuma Shuriken chests are here. Take the teleporter to B11F.

B11F - Zemus's Guardians

The path to Zemus is linear. You'll encounter Zemus's Mind (20,000 HP) and Zemus's Breath (40,000 HP) as random encounters on this floor. These aren't bosses, just powerful enemies. Continue forward to the teleporter leading to the final confrontation.

B12F - Zemus and the Final Battle

At the bottom of the Lunar Subterrane, you finally reach Zemus, the Lunarian who has been manipulating events throughout the game.

Zemus

Cutscene Battle: Golbez and FuSoYa arrive and confront Zemus. They use Twincast to cast Meteo (W.Meteo / Twin Meteor), destroying Zemus. Your party does not participate in this fight.

However, Zemus's hatred manifests as a new being...

Zeromus - Phase 1 (Invincible Form)

Zeromus
Invincible Form

Zemus's hatred takes physical form. He is completely invincible at first.

What To Do

  • Defend with all party members
  • Golbez will give you the Crystal
  • Use the Crystal from your items to reveal Zeromus's true form
  • Don't waste turns attacking - he takes no damage until you use the Crystal

Zeromus - Phase 2 (True Form)

Zeromus
HP: 65,498

The ultimate evil in its true form. Uses devastating party-wide attacks.

Attacks

  • Big Bang - Massive damage to the entire party
  • Meteo - Heavy random-target damage
  • Physical attacks and various magic

Strategy

  • Edge: Throw weapons for high damage. Start with the Knife from Yang's wife (obtained earlier in the game) for major damage, then throw other spare weapons
  • Cecil: Attack with Ragnarok for consistent damage
  • Kain: Jump to deal damage and avoid Big Bang timing
  • Rosa: Focus entirely on healing with Curaga. Keep the party alive above all else
  • Rydia: Avoid summons or magic - Zeromus counterattacks magic users. Have her use items instead
  • Cast Shell and Protect early to reduce damage
  • Heal immediately after Big Bang and Meteo
  • Keep at least one character ready to use Phoenix Downs

This fight's a war of attrition. Stay patient, prioritize healing, and chip away at his HP.

Post-Game

After defeating Zeromus and watching the ending, you can create a clear save. Loading this save puts you back before the final boss, allowing you to:

  • Farm Pink Tails for Adamant Armor
  • Complete the bestiary
  • Collect any missed treasure
  • Fight the optional bosses you skipped

The rare summon items (Goblin, Cockatrice, Bomb, Mind Flayer) have a 1/256 drop rate from their respective enemies. These are for completion only.
