After Leviathan destroys your ship, Cecil washes ashore near Mysidia - a town of mages that Baron attacked at the very start of the game. Cecil was part of that raid. The people here remember, and they don't forgive easily.
A Cold Reception
As you walk through Mysidia, the townsfolk will transform Cecil into various creatures (pig, toad, mini). It's annoying but temporary - the status wears off after a few seconds each time. This is their way of showing contempt for Cecil's role in stealing the Water Crystal.
The pub has some colorful characters. A dancer near the item shop will put Cecil to sleep and transform him into a pig. Inside the pub, you'll find Namingway (for renaming characters) and a bartender who poisons anyone foolish enough to order a drink. Don't bother trying to fight back or avoid them - just push through to the northern part of town where the Elder's house sits.
The Elder and Mt. Ordeals
Inside the Manor of Prayers, speak with the Mysidian Elder. He recognizes Cecil's guilt and inner conflict. Rather than punish him, the Elder offers a way forward: travel to Mt. Ordeals and become a Paladin. Only by shedding his dark knight armor can Cecil atone for his crimes.
But the Elder doesn't trust Cecil to go alone. He assigns two young mage twins to accompany him - officially to help, but also to keep an eye on Baron's former captain.
Palom and Porom
The twins join your party after speaking with the Elder.
- Palom - Black Mage. Cocky kid who thinks he's the best. Knows offensive spells like Fire, Blizzard, and Thunder.
- Porom - White Mage. More mature than her brother. Handles healing with Cure, Esuna, and support magic.
Together, the twins can use Twincast to combine their magic. You'll see options like Pyro (strong fire damage) and Comet during the Twincast selection. It takes both twins' turns but hits hard.
Party Setup: Put both twins in the back row immediately. They're fragile and shouldn't be taking physical hits. Cecil stays in front as the sole melee fighter until you reach Mt. Ordeals.
Mysidia Shops
Mysidia has extensive shopping options. Most of the armor here is for mages or Paladin Cecil (who doesn't exist yet). Hold off on Knight's Armor and Light Helm for Cecil - you can buy them after Mt. Ordeals when he can actually equip them.
Weapon Shop
- Ice Rod - 220 Gil (casts Blizzard when used as item)
- Flame Rod - 380 Gil (casts Fire when used as item)
- Healing Staff - 480 Gil (casts Cure when used as item, great for Porom)
- Crossbow - 700 Gil (ranged weapon)
- Holy Arrow - 500 Gil (ammunition for crossbow)
The Healing Staff is worth buying for Porom. It lets her heal without spending MP, which conserves resources during grinding sessions.
Armor Shop
- Gaia Gear - 500 Gil (body armor for mages)
- Silver Armlet - 650 Gil (accessory)
- Light Shield - 700 Gil (Paladin Cecil only)
- Wizard's Hat - 700 Gil (head protection for mages)
- Gauntlets - 3,000 Gil (Paladin Cecil only)
- Light Helm - 4,000 Gil (Paladin Cecil only)
- Knight's Armor - 8,000 Gil (Paladin Cecil only)
Buy Gaia Gear and Wizard's Hat for the twins - their starting equipment is weak. Better magic defense keeps them alive against AoE spells. Skip the Paladin gear until after Mt. Ordeals.
Item Shop
- Potion - 30 Gil
- Hi-Potion - 150 Gil
- Phoenix Down - 100 Gil
- Gold Needle - 400 Gil
- Echo Herbs - 50 Gil
- Antidote - 40 Gil
- Tent - 100 Gil
- Cottage - 500 Gil
Stock up on Hi-Potions and Phoenix Downs before Mt. Ordeals. Buy at least 10 Hi-Potions and 5 Phoenix Downs for the dungeon ahead.
Magic Shops
Mysidia has separate white and black magic shops. The twins come with decent spell selections, but you can expand their options here.
Black Magic:
- Pig - Transforms enemies into pigs (status spell)
- Toad - Transforms enemies into toads (status spell)
- Stop - Freezes enemies in time (useful for tough encounters)
- Warp - Exit dungeons instantly (very useful)
White Magic:
- Raise - Revive fallen allies mid-battle (priority purchase)
- Esuna - Cure status ailments
- Blink - Evade physical attacks
- Teleport - Quick dungeon exit and town warp
Raise is the priority. Being able to revive party members during battle makes a huge difference in Mt. Ordeals. Warp is also useful for quick dungeon exits when you need to retreat.
Inn
The inn costs 200 Gil per stay. Use it to restore HP and MP before heading out.
Chocobo Forest #3
On the path from Mysidia toward Mt. Ordeals, you'll pass a Chocobo Forest. This is Chocobo Forest #3, located south of Mt. Ordeals.
This forest has a special property - it contains a White Chocobo that fully restores your party's MP when you catch it. No need to waste Ethers or return to the Inn.
Recommended Grinding
Before heading to Mt. Ordeals, consider leveling up. The dungeon ahead has a tough boss fight that catches many players off guard. Here are the recommended levels:
- Cecil: Level 25 (minimum level 20)
- Palom: Level 17-20
- Porom: Level 17-20
The area around Mysidia has decent grinding spots. Enemies give reasonable EXP, and Porom can heal between battles to keep you going longer. Aim for at least the minimum levels - going in underleveled makes the upcoming boss unnecessarily painful.
Why Level 25 for Cecil? The boss at Mt. Ordeals has a second phase that hits hard. Cecil's HP at level 25 gives you breathing room. At level 20, you'll survive but might need perfect play. Below 20, expect multiple attempts.
Before Mt. Ordeals
When you're satisfied with your levels and have bought equipment upgrades, head north from Mysidia. The path leads through the wilderness toward Mt. Ordeals, where Cecil will face his past - and maybe gain the power to fight Golbez.
Make sure you have:
- 10+ Hi-Potions and several regular Potions
- Phoenix Downs (at least 5)
- Tents for saving progress
- Raise spell on Porom
- Gaia Gear and Wizard's Hat for the twins
- Party at recommended levels
The next chapter covers the actual dungeon and its tough boss sequence. Take your time preparing here - there's no rush, and proper preparation makes Mt. Ordeals much smoother.
