Mist Cave sits northwest of Baron Castle, cutting through the mountain range that separates the kingdom from Mist village. Cecil and Kain have orders to deliver a mysterious package - their first mission since the Mysidia raid. The cave is short but ends with a guardian boss. It'll teach you an important battle mechanic.
Achievement Alert: Before entering Mist Cave, visit the Chocobo Forest southwest of Baron. Each Chocobo Forest counts toward a trophy/achievement. Look for the distinctive ring of trees on the world map.
Dungeon Overview
Mist Cave has two main areas connected by a narrow passage. Layout is simple - follow the winding paths and grab chests along the way. The in-game map shows chest locations clearly. A wall of mist blocks the path partway through, forcing you into the boss encounter.
Enemy Encounters
Random battles here pose little threat. Cecil's sword and Kain's spear cut through everything in one or two hits. Want to conserve HP? Have Kain use Jump. He deals extra damage and becomes untargetable while airborne.
| Enemy | HP | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Goblin | 6 | Weak and common. One hit kills. |
| Insectus | 28 | Appears in groups. Standard attacks work. |
| Sword Rat | 30 | Slightly tougher. No special abilities. |
| Floating Eye | 40 | Weak to projectile attacks. Can paralyze. |
Boss: Mist Dragon
The Mist Dragon guards the passage to Mist Village. This fight teaches you a mechanic that appears throughout FF4. Some enemies change forms. Attack them in certain forms and they'll devastate you with counterattacks.
The dragon alternates between solid and mist forms. Learn to recognize the transformation or you'll burn through Potions fast.
Strategy
- When the dragon is solid: attack with both Cecil and Kain
- When it says "The Mist Dragon turned to mist!": stop attacking immediately
- Attacking the mist form triggers Cold Mist, a party-wide counter dealing heavy ice damage
- During mist phase: have Cecil Defend and Kain either Defend or use Jump
- Kain's Jump works well - if timed right, he lands after the dragon reforms
- Heal with Potions if either character drops below 100 HP
- The dragon reforms after a few turns - resume attacking when it does
Rewards: Passage to Mist Village
The battle follows a predictable rhythm. Attack for several turns until the dragon transforms. Stop. Defend or heal. Wait for the message that it's reformed. Resume attacking. Repeat until you've dealt 570 damage. Don't rush it - one poorly timed attack during mist phase wastes Potions.
The Tragedy at Mist
With the Mist Dragon defeated, proceed through the rest of the cave. The exit leads directly to Mist Village. Walk toward the center of town to trigger a cutscene.
The Bomb Ring activates on its own. Bomb monsters emerge and set fire to the village, killing everyone inside. Cecil realizes the horrible truth: Baron sent him to destroy this village. The ring was designed to kill summoners, and Mist was their home. The Mist Dragon was a summoned creature belonging to one of the villagers.
A young girl emerges from the flames - Rydia. She's the daughter of the summoner who controlled the Mist Dragon. When she realizes Cecil killed her mother's summon (and thus her mother), she snaps. In her grief, she calls upon Titan, an earth eidolon far beyond her ability to control.
Titan triggers an earthquake that tears the land apart. Cecil blacks out. When he awakens, Kain is gone, the mountain pass to Baron is destroyed, and Rydia lies unconscious nearby. The path forward leads through a desert to the oasis town of Kaipo.
Story Note: This is a turning point for Cecil. He came to Mist following orders, unaware of their true purpose. The destruction of an innocent village weighs on him, setting up his path to redemption. And the girl he orphaned - Rydia - will eventually become one of his closest allies.
