Zanarkand

Sphere Grid: At the start of the game, you'll choose between Standard (recommended for newcomers) and Expert (more freedom in character development). This choice is permanent. Standard follows traditional class roles; Expert lets any character learn any abilities.

Introduction

Tidus's House

The game begins with Tidus at his house. Approach the two girls for an autograph request. A group of kids will then ask you to teach them how to Blitz. Once finished, head down the long roadway toward the stadium.

Tidus and Auron

After the cutscene, go down the ramp and approach the man in red - Auron. Follow him.

Sinscale Battles

Sinscale Battle

You’ll face Sinscales, small flying enemies encountered during the escape. They are defeated in one hit. Only target the enemies directly in front of your party, as those behind you cannot be attacked.

Battle Tip: FFX doesn't use an ATB gauge. Instead, turns are determined by Speed stats and displayed in the turn order on the right side of the screen. You can take your time deciding actions without penalty.

Boss: Sinspawn Ammes

Sinspawn Ammes Boss

After clearing a few waves of Sinscales, you'll face your first boss: Sinspawn Ammes. This fight teaches you about Overdrives - FFX's version of Limit Breaks.

Sinspawn Ammes
HP: 2,400

This tentacled creature uses Demi, a gravity attack that deals damage equal to roughly 25% of each character's current HP. Gravity attacks can never kill you - they only reduce HP.

Strategy

  • Auron starts with a full Overdrive gauge - use Dragon Fang immediately for massive damage to all enemies
  • After Sinspawn's second Demi attack, Tidus gains his Overdrive (Swordplay)
  • Use Spiral Cut when prompted - follow the on-screen timing commands for bonus damage
  • No need to heal; Demi can't reduce HP below 1
  • Continue attacking until the boss falls

Rewards: None (story battle)

After defeating Sinspawn Ammes, head towards the blue sphere and interact with it. This Save Sphere allows you to create a save file as well as restore all HP and MP. You'll come across these throughout the game so make use of them when you see them.

Tanker Battle

Tanker Battle

Continue forward and you'll encounter more Sinscales. They spawn continuously during this sequence. Watch for Sinscales whose wings flicker - this indicates they're charging an attack. Target these first.

When Auron shouts to focus on the "Tanker," shift both characters' attacks to the large mechanical target. Five hits will destroy it and end the encounter. Ignore the Sinscales entirely once Auron gives this command.

Sin attacks Zanarkand

After the battle, float down towards the man to end the chapter.
