Submerged Ruins

Tidus awakens in water. Swim northeast to find stairs. On the eastern side, grab . Swim northwest to find the Al Bhed Compilation Sphere - south of it on the platform is .

If you've played Final Fantasy 10 before, you can transfer collected Al Bhed Primers from another save file at the Compilation Sphere. New players can skip this.
Swim north following the minimap arrow until you reach a Save Sphere. Take the first left for a . Return to the main path and head north. Tidus falls into the water - swim toward the distant Save Sphere to trigger a boss fight.
Boss: Geosgaeno

Attack the Sahagin until Geosgaeno appears. This fight is unwinnable - just attack until it ends.
This armored sea creature is covered in thick scales. The battle ends automatically after a few turns - you cannot win this fight.
Strategy
- First, defeat the three Sahagin that accompany Geosgaeno
- Don't bother healing - the battle ends regardless of your HP
- Just attack normally until the scripted escape triggers
Note: You can return to fight Geosgaeno properly much later in the game.
Ancient Ruins - Corridor & Hall

After escaping Geosgaeno, Tidus washes up inside a ruined temple. Progress through the corridor into the main hall. Save at the Save Sphere in the southwest corner.

In the room next to the save sphere, examine the box to obtain Flint. You'll need this to progress.
East of the hall is a locked door - to its right, grab an . Head north through the hall. Before climbing the stairs, grab an . Climb the stairs to find a at the top. Proceed through the door to find a at the end.
Return to the main hall and examine the fire pit in the center. Use the Flint to light a fire.
Boss: Klikk

A mechanical fiend bursts through the ruins. Klikk is your first real boss.
A machina creature that hits harder than anything you've faced. Tidus fights alone initially, but help arrives mid-battle.
Strategy
- Attack and heal with Potions to survive the opening phase
- An Al Bhed girl joins mid-battle
- Use Grenades when she instructs you - they deal significant damage to machina
- The girl can Steal additional Grenades from Klikk
- Continue the Grenade assault until Klikk falls

Salvage Ship - Sphere Grid Tutorial
On deck, speak with the Al Bhed girl. She explains the Sphere Grid - FFX's character progression system. Unlike traditional leveling, characters move along a grid of nodes, spending spheres to activate stat boosts and abilities.
Sphere Grid Basics: You earn AP from battles. Accumulate enough AP to gain a Sphere Level (S.Lv). Each S.Lv lets you move one space on the grid. Then spend Ability Spheres (or other sphere types) to activate the node you're standing on. Nodes contain HP boosts, stat increases, and new abilities.
Talk to an Al Bhed crew member to receive . Before leaving the deck, head to the back of the ship near the railing.

Al Bhed Primer Vol. I: Found at the back of the salvage ship deck. This teaches you the first letter of the Al Bhed language. Collecting all 26 Primers unlocks an achievement/trophy (Speaking in Tongues). Don't miss this one - it's easy to overlook.
Underwater Salvage Mission

The Al Bhed want help exploring submerged ruins. Dive down using the chain. You'll face random encounters against aquatic fiends - Piranha are common and weak. Use the Save Sphere in the underwater ruins to restore resources.
Boss: Tros

At the bottom of the ruins, a predatory fiend guards the salvage site. Tros is more dangerous than Klikk and introduces the Trigger Command system.
An aggressive squid-like creature that retreats behind a pillar when damaged, making it temporarily immune to attacks.
Strategy
- Attack with Tidus and use Grenades with the Al Bhed girl
- When Tros retreats behind the pillar, use the Stand By Trigger Command to recover HP
- On the second retreat, use Pincer Attack to surround Tros
- After the Pincer Attack, Tros can no longer retreat and becomes permanently attackable
- Steal additional Grenades if you run low
- Heal when HP drops below 150
Rewards: Power Sphere
After defeating Tros, return to the ship. Save your progress and speak with the Al Bhed girl again.
Sin's Attack
Rikku formally introduces herself and agrees to take Tidus to Luca. Before they can set course, Sin attacks the ship and Tidus is thrown overboard.
Treasure Chests
This chapter contains 10 collectible items. The Al Bhed Primer can be obtained later in Bikanel Desert if missed, but save yourself the backtracking and grab it now.
